To turn the Monkey pet into an independent boss killer in Soul Knight, raise its affinity before the run, secure the Pet Effectiveness perk, and run a purely defensive hero loadout so you can survive while the pet deals damage.

Why the Monkey Pet Can Solo Bosses

Unlike standard pets that primarily soak stray fire, the Monkey features an aggressive attack rhythm that relentlessly sticks to enemy hitboxes. In boss encounters, this behavior provides two core combat advantages:

  • Melee projectile clearing: Continuous melee swings erase incoming bullets directly at the source, carving safe pockets through dense projectile patterns.
  • Target lock: Boss AI frequently tracks the closest hostile unit. By staying in point-blank range, the Monkey draws the boss's primary attack patterns away from your character.

When scaled with companion perks, this persistent melee assault provides enough single-target damage to eliminate stage bosses while you focus entirely on evasion.

Pre-Run Buffs and Garden Preparation

Standard base stats are not enough for a pet to survive late-stage encounters. Stack companion enhancements and defensive utility in the lobby before starting your run:

  • Pet Food and Affinity: Feed the Monkey pet food in the lobby to increase its affinity level. Higher affinity improves the pet's AI aggression, shortens attack intervals, and boosts base survivability.
  • Pet Effectiveness Perk: Obtain this perk via dungeon level-ups or garden crops. It enlarges the pet, increases its maximum health pool, and amplifies its melee damage output.
  • Tea: Drink Tea from the lobby Beverage Vending Machine to add an extra passive buff slot for the run.
  • Defensive Garden Crops: Harvest defensive plants before entering the dungeon. Use the Mandrake for poison immunity and the Dragon Fruit Tree for fire immunity to prevent environmental wipes. If pairing with companion skills, Binary Tree provides a shotgun buff.

Because the Monkey acts as your primary damage dealer, equip your hero with items and abilities designed purely for damage mitigation.

Hero Choices

  • Druid: Summons wolves or vines that flood the arena with allied targets. This distributes incoming enemy fire across multiple units, preventing the Monkey from taking concentrated burst damage.
  • Paladin: Uses a defensive barrier skill that grants temporary invulnerability, keeping you alive in hazardous rooms while the Monkey works down the target.

Defensive Weapons

  • Shield: Acquired from the Paladin NPC during a run. Activating it generates a temporary barrier that negates incoming bullet patterns around your hero.
  • Fine Magic Staff: Spawns rotating magical orbs that passively destroy incoming projectiles while you navigate the room.
  • Fast Melee Weapons: Weapons such as the Nunchaku or Meat swing rapidly with zero or negligible energy costs, allowing you to manually swat away incoming bullet hell patterns.

Boss Fight Strategy and Aggro Management

Surviving while your pet solos an encounter requires strict positioning discipline from the moment the room activates.

  1. Delay your attack: Do not fire weapons immediately upon entering the boss room. Allow the Monkey to charge and land the opening hit so the boss targets the pet first.
  2. Break line of sight: Move toward permanent arena cover or outer perimeter pillars immediately after entry.
  3. Kite the perimeter: If the boss shifts its focus onto you, circle the arena walls in a wide arc. Do not cut across the room. The Monkey will pursue the boss from behind, maintaining constant back-damage until aggro resets.
  4. Maintain defensive swings: Keep the Fine Magic Staff active or swing your defensive melee weapon while moving to eliminate bouncing projectiles and broad shockwaves.

Handling Pet Exhaustion and Environmental Hazards

When a pet’s health bar drops to zero, it does not permanently die. Instead, it enters an exhausted state, ceases attacking, and retreats toward your hero to regenerate health.

  • Surviving pet downtime: When the Monkey is incapacitated, you must carry the defense. Activate your hero skill, retreat behind solid cover, and use melee swings to block choke points until the pet revives and re-engages.
  • Floor hazards: Pets do not pathfind around environmental damage. Biomes containing lava tiles (Volcano biome) or poison pools (Spaceship biome) will rapidly drain your pet's health. Prioritize fire and poison immunity perks to prevent floor hazards from forcing repeated pet downtime.
