Spreading gold and upgrade materials across every available unit starves your main team of necessary power. To scale effectively against increasing stage difficulty:

• Enhance Gear to Maximums: If your squad fails a stage, open your hero and unit gear menus to enhance every equipped piece to its current level cap before attempting the battle again.
