Equip a single one-handed weapon during early progression in Star Wars™: KOTOR II rather than dual wielding or using double-bladed weapons. Equipping two weapons without feat investment imposes severe attack roll penalties that cause attacks to miss repeatedly, drastically lowering your effective damage output.

How Dual-Wielding Penalties Work

Star Wars™: KOTOR II resolves attacks by rolling a 20-sided die (d20), adding your base attack bonus, attribute modifiers, and weapon bonuses, and checking the result against the enemy's Defense rating.

When you equip an off-hand weapon or a double-bladed weapon without feats, the game applies an automatic -6 penalty to your main hand and a -10 penalty to your off-hand.

Because a d20 roll represents increments of 5% per point, a -6 deduction lowers your main-hand hit chance by 30%, while a -10 deduction cuts your off-hand hit chance by 50%. A character who normally hits an early enemy on a roll of 11 (50% hit chance) will hit only on a 17 or higher with their primary weapon (20% hit chance) and require a 20 with their secondary weapon. Even though dual wielding adds an attack roll, missing the majority of strikes leaves your overall damage far lower than swinging once with normal accuracy.

Double-bladed weapons—including double-vibroblades and double-bladed lightsabers—are mechanically treated as dual wielding and share the exact same penalty calculations.

Two-Weapon Fighting Feat Progression

Dual wielding becomes viable only after investing into the Two-Weapon Fighting feat line. Each tier systematically reduces the accuracy deduction on both hands.

Feat LevelStandard Off-Hand (Main / Off)Balanced Off-Hand (Main / Off)
No Feats (Untrained)-6 / -10-4 / -8
Two-Weapon Fighting-4 / -6-2 / -4
Improved Two-Weapon Fighting-2 / -40 / -2
Master Two-Weapon Fighting0 / -20 / 0

When to Switch to Dual Wielding

  • Hold off at rank one: Rank one still leaves a -4 / -6 penalty with standard weapons, which causes noticeable misses against well-defended targets.
  • Safe minimum threshold: Switch to two weapons only after unlocking Improved Two-Weapon Fighting and using a balanced off-hand weapon, which brings your main-hand penalty to 0 and your off-hand to -2.
  • Full efficiency: Attaining Master Two-Weapon Fighting combined with a balanced off-hand weapon removes all attack deductions entirely (0 / 0).

Balanced Weapons vs. Single-Weapon Dueling

If you equip an off-hand weapon before mastering the feat line, ensure the secondary slot holds a weapon marked Balanced. Balanced weapons provide a +2 attack bonus to both hands, mitigating part of the dual-wield penalty.

  • Balanced weapons: Short swords, small vibroblades, and short lightsabers.
  • Non-balanced weapons: Standard vibroblades and standard lightsabers.

The Single-Weapon Alternative

Choosing not to dual wield is an equally viable build path. The Dueling feat tree grants stacking bonuses to both attack rolls and Defense while wielding a single one-handed weapon. This path is particularly effective for Force-focused characters such as Jedi Consulars, as it boosts survivability without requiring three feat slots to fix dual-wield accuracy penalties.

How to Audit Companion Loadouts

Companions often join your party with default weapons that do not align with their starting feats. Giving dual pistols or twin blades to a companion who lacks the necessary training cripples their performance in battle.

  1. Open the party member's Character Records screen and check the Feats tab for Two-Weapon Fighting or Dueling.
  2. Open the Equip screen and inspect the primary and secondary attack modifier values displayed alongside the equipped weapons.
  3. If equipping a secondary weapon drops the attack modifier into negative numbers or causes a sharp drop compared to their single-weapon rating, remove the off-hand weapon.
  4. Keep ranged companions equipped with a single blaster pistol or a two-handed blaster rifle until they level up and acquire the required Two-Weapon Fighting feats.
