To survive difficult encounters in StarSavior, place your primary tank in the front row to intercept incoming attacks, position fragile carries into backline corner tiles diagonally opposite your tank, and leave the tiles directly behind or adjacent to your tank empty to prevent area-of-effect (AoE) spillover.
How Grid Targeting and Aggro Work
Enemies prioritize targets in the front row nearest to their own column when making standard attacks. If multiple allied units sit at equal distances, enemy targeting defaults to the unit directly across from them or the character with the highest aggro rating. Tanks maintain aggro priority through elevated defensive base stats and provocation skills.
The primary hazard in grid deployment is secondary splash damage. Opponents and dungeon bosses frequently use linear pierces, cross-shaped blasts, and adjacent-tile cleaves. Placing a support or damage dealer directly beside or behind a frontline defender causes secondary hits to strike that fragile ally, bypassing your tank's mitigation.
Frontline Tank and Off-Tank Placement
Your front row controls where enemy attacks land and shields the rest of the party:
- Center Frontline: Deploy your primary guardian in the center front tile against standard enemy waves. This placement draws standard attacks from both flanking columns, anchoring threat in the middle of the board.
- Offset Frontline: Shift your main tank to an outer corner tile (top-front or bottom-front) when confronting bosses with straight-line pierces or column beams. This shifts incoming beam attacks down an isolated outside lane, keeping your midline and opposite backline completely safe.
- Off-Tank Flanking: Position a secondary bruiser diagonally behind the main tank or across on the opposing flank. Do not place an off-tank directly adjacent to your primary tank unless both units feature heavy damage mitigation, as shared cleaves will overwhelm your healer.
Backline Placement for Carries and Supports
Backline heroes provide necessary damage and sustain but lack base survivability:
- Fragile Carries: Place ranged damage dealers and mages in the deepest corner tiles (top-back or bottom-back). Setting your main carry diagonally opposite your front-row tank maximizes the travel distance of enemy abilities and keeps the carry outside standard cleave zones.
- Aura Supports: Deploy healers and buffers with self-centered aura skills into the center-mid or center-back tile so their effects reach both frontline defenders and flanking carries.
- Single-Target Supports: Position single-target healers in an isolated backline slot away from your primary carry to prevent both high-priority units from getting caught in the same wide-radius ultimate.
Formation Templates
Use these grid layouts based on the attack patterns of your target encounter:
| Formation | Frontline | Midline | Backline | Best Used For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard Triangle (V-Shape) | 1 Main Tank (Center Front) | 1 Bruiser (Top Mid), 1 Flex (Bottom Mid) | 1 Healer (Center Back), 1 Carry (Corner Back) | General story progression and mixed wave farming |
| Split Flank (L-Shape) | 1 Main Tank (Top Front Corner) | Empty Center | 1 Healer (Bottom Mid), 2 DPS (Bottom Back & Far Back) | Bosses with straight-line column attacks |
| Spread Defense (Box) | 1 Tank (Top Front), 1 Bruiser (Bottom Front) | Empty Midline | 1 Carry (Top Back), 1 Healer (Bottom Back) | Encounters with cross-shaped AoE bursts |
Vacating the center tiles in the Split Flank setup prevents column-piercing boss attacks from hitting secondary targets, nullifying linear debuffs.
Common Deployment Mistakes
- Stacking Directly Behind the Tank: Never place a carry or healer in the tile immediately behind your frontline defender, as column attacks will strike both simultaneously.
- Clustering Supports Together: Keeping buffers and healers on adjacent tiles exposes all support utility to simultaneous crowd-control effects like stuns or freezes.
- Relying on Auto-Deploy: Default auto-formations often group units together. Inspect the enemy's skill ranges before starting a stage and spread out your party accordingly.
- Overcrowding the Front Row: Placing three frontline melee units exposes your entire defense to wide frontal sweeps, draining team sustain faster than a healer can recover it.
