To build the best universal combat setup in State of Survival, spend only the minimum required points on early filler nodes to path straight down the War talent tree. Prioritize Lethality and Health over basic Attack and Defense, then secure deep capstone skills such as Massive March and Emergency Dressing.
Stat Priorities Across Troop Types
When talent branches diverge, prioritize Lethality and Health over Attack and Defense. In combat calculations, Attack and Defense experience diminishing returns against heavily geared opponents. Lethality increases the number of enemy units killed per combat turn, while Health keeps your troops from entering wounded status too early.
Because units fulfill different combat roles, allocate troop-specific points unevenly:
- Infantry: Focus on Health first, then Defense. Infantry absorbs incoming attacks before any other unit type; boosting their durability keeps your formation intact.
- Hunters: Focus on Lethality and Attack. Hunters serve as your primary backline damage engine, requiring high Lethality to break through enemy frontline defenses.
- Riders: Balance Lethality and Health. Riders flank the enemy backline to target opposing Hunters, so they require both kill power and enough survivability to withstand counterattacks.
Pathing Down the War Talent Tree
Reaching the bottom of the tree requires conserving points. Put only the required points into upper-tier prerequisite nodes, push toward the center to keep branching options open, and avoid maxing early Attack nodes until you reach deeper milestones.
| Tree Section | Allocation Strategy | Primary Objective |
|---|---|---|
| Tiers 1–2 (Early Tree) | Invest the bare minimum required in Troop Attack and Defense | Unlock lower tiers at the lowest point cost |
| Tiers 3–4 (Mid Tree) | Prioritize Troop Health and March Speed nodes | Increase frontline survivability and map movement speed |
| Tiers 5–6 (Deep Tree) | Maximize Troop Lethality and unit-specific Health | Boost overall squad wipe potential and damage absorption |
| Capstone Tier | Maximize Massive March, Emergency Dressing, and Brawn | Unlock essential active combat skills and key stat boosts |
Once you push as deep as your current Chief Level allows, spend any remaining surplus points on secondary combat stats in the middle tiers.
Active Skill Usage and Timing
The War talent tree contains two active skills that require manual activation before engaging:
- Massive March: Temporarily expands your squad march capacity by 10%. Trigger this skill immediately before launching a solo attack or starting a rally against a Capital, Fortress, or alliance headquarters to maximize troop volume.
- Emergency Dressing: Converts a portion of battle casualties that would normally die into wounded troops sent to your hospital. Activate this skill right before defending against major incoming rallies or fighting in State vs. State (SVS) conflicts to avoid permanent troop losses.
Managing Talent Presets
Do not leave your Chief assigned to War talents during peacetime, as doing so stalls your building and research speeds.
Use the Talent Preset feature unlocked through VIP levels or Chief Talent research:
- Assign Preset 1 to Economy talents, maxing Construction Speed, Research Speed, and Gathering buffs.
- Assign Preset 2 to your War talent configuration.
Switch to your War preset immediately before events like Reservoir Raid, Capital Clash, or cross-state combat. As soon as your marches return and the fighting ends, switch back to your Economy preset to resume standard development without expending Chief Talent Reset tokens.

Can you add more details about strategy in a future update?
I tried this today and it worked better than my old setup.
I wish I had read this before upgrading the wrong thing.
This saved me time in the early game.
