To beat the Laboratory Zombie in State of Survival, turn off auto-combat before the fight begins. The encounter requires manual aim to deploy Sarge's gun turret as an off-angle decoy, disciplined timing to stun the boss out of its lethal slam attacks, and rapid repositioning to keep heroes out of persistent acid puddles.

A successful squad requires a frontline tank with an interrupt skill, a turret deployer to manipulate enemy targeting, and a secondary damage dealer to control laboratory minion spawns. Story progression heroes fulfill these roles effectively.

Turret Placement and Aggro Control

The Laboratory Zombie targets the nearest enemy unit directly in front of it. If your heroes remain clustered in their initial positions, the boss's frontal swings and corrosive bile will hit your entire backline.

Manipulate the boss's targeting with these positioning rules:

  • Flank with the turret: Aim Sarge's deployment reticle 45 to 90 degrees to the side or slightly behind the boss. The boss will turn away from your squad to hit the turret, aiming all frontal cleave attacks away from your damage dealers.
  • Hold backup decoys: If running Maddie & Frank, deploy Frank only after the first turret is destroyed. Staggering mechanical and pet decoys ensures the boss rarely attacks your heroes directly.
  • Cluster add spawns: Mutant adds that break out of canisters naturally gravitate toward the closest active decoy, keeping them grouped for area-of-effect abilities.

Interrupting Boss Attacks

Auto-combat fails in this fight because the system fires skills the moment energy is available. Chef or Rusty will waste their crowd control on basic attacks, leaving your squad defenseless when the boss starts its heavy attacks.

Manage your combat abilities using the following execution sequence:

  1. Save your crowd control: Hold Chef's Barbecue Bomb (or Rusty's stun) fully charged off cooldown. Do not use stuns during the boss's normal melee attacks.
  2. Watch the telegraph: When the boss channels its Heavy Overhead Slam, a red circular telegraph expands beneath its feet.
  3. Interrupt immediately: Cast Chef's stun directly onto the boss before the red circle fills. A successful stun cancels the attack, prevents the shockwave damage and knockback, and resets the boss to its basic attack sequence.
  4. Dodge line charges and bile: If the boss winds up a directional bile spray, immediately drag heroes out of the frontal cone.

Arena Hazards and Add Management

The laboratory arena has limited space, and lingering hazards can quickly defeat your squad if ignored:

  • Move out of acid pools: The boss periodically leaves contaminated toxic patches on the ground. These puddles apply a stacking damage-over-time debuff that bypasses armor. Drag heroes to clear flooring as soon as a puddle forms beneath them. Avoid retreating in a straight line toward arena walls, where your units can become trapped.
  • Focus boss health over adds: When minion adds spawn from perimeter canisters, keep Sarge's primary damage directed at the Laboratory Zombie. Use Maddie's pipe bombs or Sarge's passive piercing fire to clear minions incidentally. Defeating the Laboratory Zombie instantly despawns all remaining laboratory adds and completes the stage.
