To beat anti-control counterpicks when running a crowd-control team in Summoners War World Arena, hold your team-wide area-of-effect (AoE) skills until you isolate or reset the enemy unit that punishes crowd control. In the draft, protect your composition by reserving late picks for single-target cooldown pushbacks, targeted passive nullification, and deliberate bans.

Recognize Anti-Control Threat Types

Opponents generally use three distinct archetypes to disrupt crowd-control drafts:

  • Turn Cutters: Monsters like Josephine, Antares, and Verdehile cut in between your turns when their passives trigger on critical hits, ally incapacitation, or standard enemy turns.
  • Self-Cleansing Bruisers: Monsters like Juno turn multiple incoming harmful effects into sustained recovery and attack bar gains for the whole team.
  • Reactive Cleansers: Monsters like Haegang or Lulu convert incoming debuffs or buff strips into immediate team-wide cleanses, immunity, or attack bar acceleration.

Matchup Priorities and Counter-Tactics

When facing reactive passives, switch from automatic AoE rotations to disciplined single-target lockdown.

CounterpickTrigger ConditionPractical Counterplay
JosephineAn ally suffers a stunProvoke, silence, or reset Josephine before landing AoE stuns on her allies.
JunoEnds her turn with two or more debuffsApply only a single debuff (such as a stun alone), or control her using pure attack bar reduction.
VerdehileLands a critical hit on your unitsLock him down with sleep or freeze; do not use weak, non-lethal hits that grant him counter opportunities.
AntaresRolls a random bonus turn on an enemy actionApply unresistable cooldown resets or focus him down quickly with single-target damage.

Handling Passive Turn Cutters

Against Josephine, avoid using blanket stuns on the rest of her team while her passive is ready. Instead, direct single-target cooldown delays, provokes, or attack bar reduction at Josephine first. Once her passive is on cooldown, you can cast your broader control skills safely.

Against Juno, monitor your debuff counts. Juno only cleanses and heals if she has two or more debuffs at the end of her turn. If she has only one debuff, such as a single stun, she will pass her turn without cleansing her team. Avoid stacking extraneous debuffs like continuous damage or defense breaks onto her.

Neutralizing Cleansers and Boosters

Haegang punishes multi-hit buff strippers by boosting his team forward the moment an enemy removes buffs. To handle Haegang, do not draft pure strippers unless you have immediate follow-up control to reset or incapacitate his allies before they use that accelerated turn. Alternatively, hold your strip skills until the opponent has already committed their opening skills.

Against active cleansers, rely on fast single-target reset units like Oliver, Cheongpung, or Sekhmet. Forcing an active cleanse onto cooldown leaves the rest of the opponent's bruiser core vulnerable to your standard lockdown loop.

Adjusting Your Draft and Ban Priority

Committing exclusively to AoE control units in your first three picks leaves you vulnerable to targeted counterpicks. Structure your draft to leave room for reactive answers:

  1. Draft Slots 1–2: Secure high-speed, contested openers and flexible controllers (such as Moore or Cheongpung).
  2. Draft Slots 3–4: Pick precision single-target control, strips, or cooldown reset tools like Oliver or Sagar.
  3. Draft Slot 5: Select a hard counter or a must-ban threat tailored to the opponent's responses.

If the opponent drafts passive threats like Juno, Douglas, or Verdehile, late picks like Tesarion shut down those passives with Oblivion. Single-target damage dealers like Miles or Dominic can also remove threats without triggering broad counter mechanics.

Deciding the Final Ban

Evaluate whether your opponent picked one isolated counter or multiple layers of anti-control:

  • Single Counter: If the opponent picked only one disruptive monster alongside standard bruisers, use your ban on that specific unit.
  • Layered Counters: If the opponent drafted two anti-control monsters, ban the one that directly stops your primary opener, and use your draft tools (such as Oblivion or targeted resets) to control the remaining threat in combat.
