To defeat speed-focused teams in Summoners War World Arena (RTA) without drafting a speed leader, stop trying to win raw turn-one speed contests. Instead, exploit base speed math with high-tempo disruptors, draft defensive leader skills, use Nemesis runes to cut turn order, and field self-sustaining bruisers.
Exploit Base Speed Disparities
Speed leader skills calculate bonus speed strictly from a monster's base speed rather than total runed speed. For example, a 33% speed leader on a monster with 100 base speed adds 33 flat combat speed. Monsters with exceptionally high base speeds can offset an opposing speed leader through rune quality alone, allowing you to steal the first turn against standard controllers like Oliver or Moore.
| Monster | Base Speed | Rune Set Priority | Strategic Counter Role |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ethna (Wind Hell Lady) | 119 | Swift / Blade or Focus | Outspeeds and stuns controllers; cycles attack bar |
| Triton (Wind Sea Emperor) | 116 | Swift / Will | Strips enemy buffs and reduces attack bars by 25% |
| Eshir (Light Werewolf 2A) | 115 | Swift / Shield or Will | Boosts ally attack bars and disrupts opening targets |
| Sekhmet (Fire Desert Queen) | 113 | Swift / Focus | Resets enemy cooldowns and steals positive effects |
Drafting these monsters on fast Swift sets allows you to control or reset the enemy's attack bar booster before their team moves.
Draft Defensive Leader Skills
Giving up the speed leader slot opens your leader position for team-wide survivability stats that directly counter fragile, high-speed drafts:
- HP Leaders (33% to 44%): Monsters like Karnal and Mo Long expand your total health pool, preventing first-turn cleaves from eliminating key units.
- Resistance Leaders (41% to 50%): Leaders such as Tesarion lower the success rate of enemy debuffs, particularly against controllers built with low Accuracy to maximize speed sub-stats.
- Defense Leaders (33% to 44%): These mitigate physical multi-hit openers and snipers, forcing opponents to exhaust offensive cooldowns without securing a knockout.
Use Nemesis Runes to Cut Turn Order
Nemesis rune sets grant a 4% attack bar boost for every 7% of maximum HP lost. Equipping support units on double- or triple-Nemesis sets allows them to absorb an initial area-of-effect (AoE) hit, gain 100% attack bar, and interrupt the enemy's attack sequence before their primary damage dealer acts.
- Equip Nemesis on Cleaners and Healers: Place monsters like Riley, Abellio, or Ariel on Nemesis and Will sets.
- Balance Defense and HP: Ensure your turn-cutter survives the opening hit while taking enough damage (roughly 25% to 40% of max HP) to fill their attack bar.
- Interrupt the Follow-Up: Use the stolen turn to cast team-wide immunity, shields, or mass healing to neutralize the enemy setup.
Field Counter-Attacking Bruisers
Speed-reliant drafts trade durability for turn priority. Counter them by fielding bruisers equipped with defensive passives, counterattacks, and sustain:
- Camilla (Water Valkyrja): Passively cleanses critical hits and regenerates health, reducing the effectiveness of high-speed critical damage threats.
- Xing Zhe (Wind Monkey King): Reduces incoming team damage and launches counterattacks that stun fragile attackers.
- Douglas (Fire Striker): Glances incoming hits and counters unarmored targets for heavy damage.
Equip these units with Despair or Vampire sets to outlast burst damage and eliminate attackers in prolonged engagements.
Ban Mechanical Enablers Over Speed Leaders
Do not default to banning the opponent's 24% or 33% speed leader. When your team is built to absorb damage and disrupt attack sequences, a monster like Vanessa or Psamathe presents minimal threat on its own.
Instead, ban the active units that threaten your defensive setup:
- Dedicated strippers that remove your Will runes.
- Cooldown-reset controllers like Cheongpung.
- Defense-ignoring snipers like Sonia and Miles that bypass bulk.
Leaving an enemy speed leader on the field neutralizes one of their draft slots while your team capitalizes on superior base stats, sustain, and counter-mechanics.

I wish I had read this before upgrading the wrong thing.
Good guide for Summoners War players. The base building part was useful.
The tips are practical and easy to follow.
I tried this today and it worked better than my old setup.
