In Sword x Staff, your active resonance tier is determined strictly by the single lowest-level Fantomon currently assigned to your deployed battle slots. To prevent stat bottlenecks and preserve team-wide milestone bonuses, distribute your leveling resources evenly across all active slots rather than funneling materials into a single pet.
How the Lowest-Level Resonance Anchor Works
The resonance system does not calculate an average level across your party. Instead, it anchors your resonance tier directly to whichever deployed Fantomon has the lowest level. If three deployed units reach level 60 while your fourth unit sits at level 20, the system treats your overall team resonance as level 20.
Resonance tiers grant universal attribute bonuses—including flat Attack, Defense, HP, and percentage-based modifiers—that scale both your player character and your active squad. Because major milestone bonuses unlock only when every active slot meets a specific level threshold, neglecting one slot forfeits those tier bonuses entirely.
| Investment Strategy | Slot Levels | Active Resonance Tier | Impact on Team Attributes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Uneven Funneling | 70 / 50 / 40 / 20 | Level 20 | Capped at lowest slot; loses higher tier milestones |
| Balanced Distribution | 45 / 45 / 45 / 45 | Level 45 | Advances resonance tier; unlocks milestone stat bonuses |
Concentrating experience into a single damage dealer produces diminishing returns. While the individual pet gains raw combat power, pet damage output in difficult encounters does not offset the lost character stats caused by a suppressed resonance tier.
Deployed Slots vs. Undeployed Fantomon
Resonance calculations apply exclusively to the creatures occupying your active deployment slots. Undeployed Fantomon stored in your inventory or collection do not lower your active resonance tier.
- Active units: Every deployed slot directly dictates your combat resonance level and active combat performance.
- Undeployed units: Reserve creatures provide passive collection perks, bond effects, or dispatch value without affecting combat resonance. Spending growth materials on bench units does not raise your resonance tier.
Because undeployed units do not penalize your team, focus your leveling materials entirely on your active deployment core.
Leveling and Reset Strategies
To prevent progression stalls and maintain steady resonance upgrades, use structured leveling increments and reallocate resources whenever your roster changes.
Rotate Upgrades in Increments
Upgrade your active slots in synchronized blocks of 5 or 10 levels rather than leveling units at random. Bring each deployed Fantomon to the target milestone before advancing any single pet into the next bracket. If certain thresholds require specific breakthrough materials, stockpile those advancement catalysts ahead of time so the lowest unit does not get stuck behind an artificial cap.
Reallocate Materials Before Deploying New Units
Placing a newly acquired level 1 Fantomon directly into an active slot instantly drops your active resonance tier to level 1. Before swapping a new unit into your battle formation, utilize the resource reset mechanic:
- Reset an over-leveled or benched Fantomon to refund its invested materials.
- Spend the refunded experience items directly on the new recruit.
- Bring the incoming Fantomon up to the existing team baseline before placing it into the active slot.
Resetting and rebalancing immediately preserves your resonance milestones and ensures new recruits enter combat at full effectiveness.
