To survive combat encounters in Tearscape, shift from reactive panic-dodging to proactive positioning. Success requires tracking enemy attack telegraphs, preserving stamina for defensive actions, and capitalizing on vulnerability windows right after an enemy finishes an attack animation.

Reading Enemy Attack Animations

Focusing on an opponent's physical stance rather than their health bar reveals their upcoming attacks. Every enemy type uses a visual wind-up before generating an active hit box.

  • Avoid panic-rolling: Move incrementally toward or away from an enemy to keep your distance controlled.
  • Timing the dodge: Wait until an attack animation reaches its peak wind-up before triggering a roll.
  • Countering: Executing a precise dodge leaves you within striking range to hit back immediately while the enemy is stuck in recovery frames.

Managing Stamina Budgets

Stamina controls both offense and defense in Tearscape. Depleting your bar completely leaves you unable to dodge or reposition, making you vulnerable to incoming strikes.

  • Apply a two-strike rule: In early encounters, limit attacks to two swings before backing away or preparing to dodge. This prevents getting stuck in an animation lock when an enemy counters.
  • Save stamina for defenses: Never empty your gauge on basic attacks. Preserve enough stamina to execute an emergency dodge unless the target is already staggered.
  • Finisher exception: The only safe opportunity to expend all remaining stamina is when an enemy enters a staggered state.

Controlling Positioning Against Groups

Fighting multiple enemies at once increases the risk of being trapped or caught off-guard by off-screen attacks.

  1. Avoid corners: Stay out of dead ends, narrow dead-end corridors, and tight spaces where dodge trajectories are blocked.
  2. Target outer edges: Move toward enemies on the perimeter of the group to keep all active threats in your forward view.
  3. Funnel enemies: Move behind pillars, walls, or environmental features. This breaks group formations into single-file lines, allowing you to isolate targets one at a time.

Exploiting Recovery Windows for Poise Damage

Dealing poise damage to stagger enemies is the most efficient method for clearing tough targets, but it requires precise timing.

Weapon TypeStagger PotentialStamina Cost per SwingCombat Application
Heavy WeaponsHighHighBest used during major recovery windows to force quick staggers.
Light WeaponsModerate to LowLowIdeal for fast recovery attacks and fishing for safer staggers.

Strike during the recovery phase—the moment right after an enemy finishes an attack swing but before returning to their default stance. If a target resists heavy weapons or drains too much stamina, switch to a faster weapon to strike safely during recovery windows.

Resetting Aggro and Strategic Retreats

If an encounter falls out of your control or your stamina runs out, break line of sight to reset the fight.

  • Use verticality and ledges: Drop down from elevated platforms or step behind large structures to break target acquisition.
  • Exploit tether limits: Most enemies stop chasing after you put sufficient distance between them and their spawn area.
  • Reset resource gauges: Retreating allows stamina and health to recover fully so you can restart the encounter under favorable conditions.
