To progress through the intermediate stages of The Elder Scrolls: Castles without hitting combat walls, build a balanced three-hero quest squad, equip your production workers with specialized tools, and stop building new rooms whenever enemy scaling outpaces your gear.

Assemble a Three-Hero Combat Squad

Mid-game campaign quests and gauntlets punish squads composed entirely of damage dealers. Structure your combat party with three distinct roles: a frontline tank, a single-target striker, and a utility caster.

  1. Frontline Tank: Place a sword-and-shield fighter at the front of your lineup to draw initial enemy aggro and absorb heavy attacks.
  2. Fast Striker: Position a dagger or bow user directly behind the tank to burst down enemy mages and archers.
  3. Staff Caster: Include a staff user to provide healing, elemental debuffs, or ranged crowd control.

Combat requires active micromanagement. When a boss winds up a wide cleave or unblockable strike, drag your striker and staff caster out of the attack area immediately. Preserve your healer and avoid relying on potions, which carry cooldowns and should be reserved for unexpected burst damage.

Prioritize Weapon Roles and Armor Upgrades

Upgrade your frontline defender's shield and armor at the Smithy and Sewing Table before investing materials into offensive weapons. If your tank falls, enemies quickly eliminate your backline. Once your tank survives encounters reliably, upgrade your primary damage dealer's weapon to the next material tier (such as Iron to Steel or Silver) to shorten fight duration.

Equip Workstations and Match Subject Traits

Do not leave crafted tools in storage. Handing appropriate tools to station workers increases baseline yields far more effectively than passive room upgrades alone.

  • Smithy and Workshop: Equip hammers and chisels to speed up gear crafting and building material processing.
  • Kitchen and Oil Press: Equip ladles, pans, and extraction tools to raise food and oil generation per cycle.
  • Sewing Table: Equip shears and needles to reduce crafting times for robes and light armor.

Assign these tools to subjects whose inherent traits match the station's resource type. A worker with a relevant production trait holding an upgraded tool produces roughly twice the output of an unequipped, traitless worker. Keep your older tools in storage instead of scrapping them so replacement workers can maintain production rates during shifts caused by low happiness or castle events.

Control Dynasty Pacing and Farm Materials

Dynasty levels rise quickly when you construct rooms and rush project timers, but enemy difficulty in daily tasks, Sheogorath gauntlets, and events scales upward alongside your Dynasty level. If you expand your castle layout faster than you can upgrade your gear, daily battles become unsustainable.

When bosses start defeating your tank within a few hits, pause all room construction:

  1. Halt Room Building: Stop spending resources on new castle expansions to freeze Dynasty level scaling.
  2. Revisit Cleared Campaign Stages: Repeat earlier campaign stages featuring single bosses or low-threat mob packs to safely gather gold, ingots, and cloth.
  3. Upgrade Crafting Stations: Use farmed materials to upgrade the Smithy and Sewing Table.
  4. Equip Full Sets: Forge complete armor and weapon sets for your primary three-hero combat team before resuming room expansion.
