To maximize your shelter's growth in Tiles Survive!!, do not leave unused heroes at level 1. Funneling low amounts of surplus Hero EXP into benched SR and non-meta SSR heroes unlocks permanent, account-wide passives and completes early growth milestones that reward free skill books. You can then reinvest those reward books directly into your primary combat squad.
Deployed Skills vs. Permanent Passives
Hero skills in Tiles Survive!! fall into two functional groups:
- Deployed skills: Require the hero to lead an active march or occupy a designated wall defense slot. If the hero sits idle, these skills provide zero value.
- Static passives: Apply permanent, shelter-wide benefits once unlocked. These traits function globally without taking up a march slot or consuming stamina.
To identify high-value bench units, inspect each hero's skill panel. Prioritize heroes with skills stating "Permanently increases" over those marked "When leading troops."
High-Value Support Categories
Support heroes offer development and economic enhancements that save speedups, raw resources, and training materials.
| Category | Primary Passive Benefit | Deployment Needed? | Saved Resources |
|---|---|---|---|
| Development | Construction and research speed increases | No (Global passive) | Speedup tokens and Gems |
| Logistics & Gathering | Resource yield and map gathering rates | Situational (Some global, some march-only) | Timber, Water, and Oil |
| Military Instruction | Troop training speed and hospital capacity | No (Shelter-wide) | Training speedups and Bio-caps |
| Tactical Support | Flat troop attack and defense attribute boosts | No (Passive unlock tier) | Combat casualties in PvE and KvK |
Level Breakpoints for Bench Heroes
Hero EXP costs scale sharply at higher brackets. Taking one combat hero from level 50 to 60 requires enough EXP to raise multiple bench units to their primary passive thresholds. Stop leveling bench units once they reach these specific breakpoints:
- Level 10: Unlocks the first additional skill slot and triggers the initial growth milestone reward chest. Bring all unused heroes to level 10 first to sweep up cheap skill books.
- Level 20: Unlocks the second skill slot and activates early economic or training passives.
- Level 35: Unlocks the third skill slot. This is the primary stopping point for most economy and development heroes.
- Level 35+: Stop leveling inactive units here. Only proceed toward level 50 if a hero possesses an essential high-tier shelter perk.
Resource Rules to Avoid Waste
Unlocking passive slots does not mean you should fully build bench units. Follow these rules to protect your main formation's combat strength:
- Save universal shards for combat leads: Promote bench SR units using only duplicate fragments obtained from standard recruiting crates. Never spend universal shards on inactive units.
- Do not spend skill books on support passives: Leveling a hero unlocks the passive slot, but upgrading the skill level itself costs manuals better reserved for your frontline damage dealers and tanks.
- Do not assign high-tier gear to bench units: Units stationed inside shelter buildings (such as the Training Grounds or Research Lab) provide their bonuses based on assignment alone. Keep refined weapon and armor sets on your active deployment teams.

I tried this today and it worked better than my old setup.
This saved me time in the early game.
Nice guide. I am checking the other Tiles Survive! articles next.
I wish I had read this before upgrading the wrong thing.
