In Tiny War: Kingdom Defense, merge two identical units of the same tier when board space becomes constrained or when you need an immediate damage spike. Hold matching units separate whenever their current placements are holding separate lanes or choke points without leaking enemies.
Merging vs. Holding Decisions
| Action | When to Choose | Key Benefit |
|---|---|---|
| Merge Units | Board has fewer than 1–2 open tiles, or an elite enemy or wave surge approaches. | Frees up grid space, raises unit tier, and increases raw damage, reach, or special attack effects. |
| Hold Units | Duplicate units are successfully covering separate lanes, or current defenses are holding steadily. | Preserves full lane coverage and saves immediate power spikes for boss rounds or emergency clears. |
Managing Grid Space and Unit Placement
- Maintain Buffer Tiles: Keep at least 1 to 2 tiles empty on your grid at all times. This prevents board locks and gives you room to drop new purchases and complete merge chains.
- Position High-Tier Units Up Front: Place your highest-tier units at the front of your formation so your strongest damage sources engage enemies immediately.
- Organize the Backline: Group lower-tier units of the same level together in the backline. Scanning matching tiers quickly lets you react faster when enemies begin breaking through.
- Clear Low-Tier Clutter: Avoid letting the entire board fill with low-level units. If a board fills completely, you lose the ability to deploy reinforcements during sudden enemy surges.
Upgrade Timing and Resource Spending
- Purchase with a Purpose: Spend gold or resources to buy new units only when you have empty grid space and a direct path to a merge. Avoid draining your treasury to buy units that cannot be combined.
- Save Merges for Spikes: Avoid merging all units during quiet moments. Trigger your merges when enemy density increases or an elite target reaches your front line to turn the tide of battle with instant power spikes.
- Hold Reserve Upgrades for Boss Waves: Keep ready-to-merge duplicate pairs on the board during routine waves. Triggering those merges mid-combat during final waves or boss rounds provides an instant burst of strength when failure is imminent.
