To level efficiently through the campaign in Torchlight: Infinite, prioritize equipment that grants high base Energy over low-level legendary items, funnel that Energy into support skills for a single primary attack, and keep your elemental resistances capped. Rush directly to quest markers while ignoring isolated standard enemies to reach the endgame Netherrealm maps quickly.

Prioritizing Gear Energy Over Item Rarity

Gear Energy determines how many support skills you can link to your active attacks. An unlinked skill deals minor base damage, while linking multiple support gems provides multiplicative damage scaling. Weapons and armor pool Energy together for your character, which you manually allocate in the Skills menu.

Early legendary (orange) drops frequently offer low or zero Energy. A magic (blue) or rare (purple) item with substantial Energy is significantly more valuable because it provides the 20 to 50 Energy needed to run three or four support skills on your main attack.

Check vendor stock and loot drops specifically for higher Energy values. Whenever you equip an upgrade, open the Skills menu immediately to allocate the extra Energy into your primary damage setup.

Allocating Energy and Setting Up Auras

Spread Energy stunts damage output during the campaign. Focus your available Energy into one primary damage skill rather than dividing it across several offensive abilities.

  • Primary Active Skill: Assign your main area-of-effect or single-target skill to your highest-Energy slot. Link damage multipliers, attack or cast speed modifiers, and added flat damage supports to this single ability.
  • Passive Aura Skills: Slot beneficial auras into passive skill slots to gain flat damage bonuses, critical strike chance, or defensive buffs.
  • Mana Reservation Management: Support gems linked to passive auras increase the percentage of mana they reserve. Keep enough unreserved mana available so your primary attack and movement skills can be used continuously without draining your resource pool mid-combat.

Allocating talent points in straight lines toward major Core Talents provides much larger performance increases than spreading points across minor utility perks.

  1. Target Milestone Thresholds: God Talent trees unlock major Core Talents at 10-point and 20-point investments. Core nodes provide build-defining modifiers or substantial damage multipliers.
  2. Prioritize Main Damage and Life: Pick minor nodes that increase your specific damage type (physical, fire, cold, lightning, or erosion) and maximum life.
  3. Defer Secondary Utility: Skip niche stats like block chance or mana regeneration early on unless your main skill requires them to function.
  4. Use Free Respecs: Campaign progression allows free talent point reallocations. If damage drops off against story bosses, reset your points and route them along the shortest path to your next Core Talent.

Campaign Routing and Mob Management

Clearing every standard white monster pack slows campaign progression and yields minimal experience relative to the time spent.

  • Focus on Objectives: Follow the mini-map guide marker straight to zone exits, story targets, and regional bosses.
  • Target Elites and Clusters: Engage rare elite monsters marked by glowing auras and dense enemy packs, as they supply the vast majority of experience and rare loot.
  • Use Mobility Skills: Slot a low-cooldown mobility skill—such as Leap Attack, Spiral Strike, or Blur—and use it repeatedly across zones to minimize travel time.
  • Monitor Area Level: Check your character level against the zone level. If you fall more than three levels behind the area, defeat several dense elite packs to catch up before entering the act boss encounter.

Early Defensive Layering

Transition bosses and later campaign acts feature heavy elemental burst damage. While basic armor and evasion mitigate early physical attacks, unmitigated elemental hits can kill an under-geared character in a single strike.

Inspect your character sheet regularly to ensure Fire, Cold, Lightning, and Erosion resistances are moving toward the 75% cap. Use rings, necklaces, and belts to cover missing resistances without sacrificing weapon damage or chest armor Energy. Additionally, equip an instant-recovery Life Flask on your potion key and replace it with higher-level tiers as soon as they drop to survive major boss mechanics cleanly.
