Armies in Total Battle: War Strategy lose battles when players rely on total Might instead of tactical mechanics. Battles resolve through discrete, round-based calculations rather than a single power comparison. Defeats typically happen because fragile damage dealers lack a frontline meat shield, the march runs into severe troop-type counters, or low combat speed forfeits the first strike.
To fix failing marches immediately, restructure your army composition to absorb initial rounds of damage, scout targets to counter their defense, and review detailed combat reports.
The Might Trap: Why High Power Still Loses
Might represents overall account investment, including total trained troops, building levels, and research milestones. It does not measure tactical synergy on the battlefield.
In combat, each round calculates the attacks of surviving units, their damage multipliers, armor ratings, and captain bonuses. Because troop stacks lose damage output as their numbers drop, an unshielded high-Might force will rapidly lose combat effectiveness:
- Glass-cannon collapse: Fielding high-tier ranged units or siege without defensive absorption allows an opponent with lower total Might to wipe your primary damage dealers in the opening round.
- Bloated low-tier losses: Padding an army with weak, mismatched troops without a clear role can feed combat bonuses to the defender while taking up march capacity.
- Flawed auto-presets: Automated march suggestions prioritize raw troop numbers and Might over unit counters and formation roles.
Build a Resilient Frontline
Backline units—such as ranged squads, siege engines, and magical beasts—deal heavy damage per round but possess minimal health and armor. Targeting mechanics force frontline melee units, such as Spearmen and Guards, to absorb incoming attacks first. If that frontline breaks, opposing forces strike your high-value damage dealers directly.
Apply these rules when assembling your march:
- Dedicate 30% to 40% of march capacity to the front: Fill this portion with durable melee infantry tasked solely with soaking damage.
- Layer lower-tier buffer stacks: Placing lower-tier infantry ahead of elite units forces enemy attacks to waste damage on expendable troops, keeping high-tier damage dealers alive for later rounds.
- Assign defensive Captain bonuses: Equip captains offering health, armor, and resurrection bonuses to keep your frontline intact through extended engagements.
Match Troop Types Against Enemy Weaknesses
Standard unit classes have distinct advantages and vulnerabilities. Marching an army dominated by one archetype into its direct counter reduces your outgoing damage and increases incoming enemy strikes. Always scout the target beforehand to verify the defending composition.
| Troop Class | Strong Against | Vulnerable To | Tactical Role |
|---|---|---|---|
| Melee / Guards | Ranged & Archers | Cavalry & Mounted Units | Frontline wall and primary damage absorption |
| Ranged / Archers | Mounted & Flying Units | Melee & Heavy Infantry | Sustained backline physical damage dealer |
| Mounted / Cavalry | Melee & Siege Engines | Ranged Formations | Flanking and fast backline disruption |
| Siege Engines | Fortifications & Walls | Fast Melee & Cavalry | City assaults and wall demolition |
| Monsters / Beasts | Mixed Generic Formations | Anti-Beast Formations | Shock units for breaking stalemates |
Secure Initiative with Combat Speed
Initiative determines which side attacks first in each combat round. Striking first reduces the enemy stack before they can retaliate. Because damaged stacks deal reduced damage, winning the initiative drastically limits the counterattack your frontline must absorb.
If an army struggles against evenly matched targets, upgrade combat speed to secure the opening blow:
- Prioritize Academy research: Complete speed and initiative branches under military research trees.
- Equip speed gear: Assign Captain equipment and talent points that grant combat speed buffs to the units leading your march.
How to Diagnose a Loss in Battle Reports
When an attack fails, open the detailed combat log rather than looking only at casualty numbers:
- Check the round summary: Identify the specific turn where your frontline troop count reached zero.
- Review incoming damage breakdown: Determine which enemy unit type dealt the highest percentage of damage to see if your frontline lacked the proper counter.
- Inspect fortification barriers: In city sieges, verify whether defensive walls absorbed your opening attacks while the garrison attacked your units for free.
- Compare leader bonuses: Check the opposing Captain and Hero equipment to see if superior enchanted gear or talent bonuses offset the difference in army size.

This saved me time in the early game.
Can you add more details about strategy in a future update?
I tried this today and it worked better than my old setup.
The tips are practical and easy to follow.
