To survive dense enemy swarms in Vampire Crawlers, immediately retreat toward a narrow hallway and force incoming mobs into a single column. Wide chambers allow fast-moving minions to flank your crawler and body-block your escape routes. Funneling the horde into a corridor maximizes the damage of linear piercing cards, neutralizes peripheral flankers, and delays rear melee units.
Funneling Mob Waves Through Choke Points
As soon as a room encounter begins, locate the nearest one-tile or two-tile corridor threshold and move toward it before enemies surround you.
Fighting in wide chambers forces you to waste energy on panic shields to mitigate multi-angle damage. Stepping back into a doorway or hallway provides two major tactical advantages:
- Eliminates Flanking: Enemies can only approach from your direct forward vector, removing blind spots and preventing surrounds.
- Disrupts Enemy Pathfinding: Rear-line melee monsters are blocked by the units ahead of them. They waste their turns shuffling behind the front ranks, significantly lowering the total damage you receive each round.
Selecting and Upgrading AoE Attack Cards
Linear piercing attacks and wide cleaves provide far greater energy efficiency than single-target strikes when facing dozens of low-health enemies like bats, skeletons, or vermin. Single-target cards should be reserved for finishing sturdy targets once the swarm is thinned.
| Attack Archetype | Primary Role | Ideal Target Setup | Energy Efficiency |
|---|---|---|---|
| Linear Piercing (e.g., Clockwork Lance) | Clears straight columns down hallways | 4+ enemies lined up in a corridor | Extreme |
| Horizontal Cleave | Wipes wide frontal arcs before flankers spread | 3–5 grouped units directly ahead | High |
| Radial Burst | Emergency wave clear when surrounded | 5+ encircling minions in open tiles | Moderate to High |
| Single-Target Heavy | Eliminates armored elites anchoring the swarm | 1 isolated high-health target | Low against swarms |
Prioritize upgrading your linear piercing cards first at rest sites and corridor forge events. Because a piercing attack hits every monster in its path, increasing its base damage scales across the entire line of targets, clearing hallways in fewer actions.
Turn Sequencing for Swarms and Elites
Elites frequently spawn inside dense mob packs, acting as damage sponges to protect weaker units behind them. Attacking an elite directly while its minions are alive allows the surrounding swarm to chip away at your health. Dedicate at least half of your energy each turn to area-of-effect (AoE) clearing, following this turn sequence:
- Disrupt Windups: Play knockback, stun, or chill cards to interrupt telegraphed enemy attacks or stagger fast units.
- Clear the Minions: Cast your primary piercing or cleave attacks to vaporize the low-health swarm surrounding the elite.
- Target the Anchor: Spend remaining energy on single-target burst attacks against the isolated elite, or stack defensive armor to block its telegraphed strike.
Handling Fast Rushers, Split Spawns, and XP Drops
Fast rusher mobs often outrun the main horde. If ignored, they can reach your position early and body-block your planned retreat corridor. Use displacement abilities like knockback or chill to shove these advance units back into the slower pack, stalling their approach.
When enemy waves spawn simultaneously from two opposing directions, do not hold your ground in the middle. Commit your full offensive hand toward the smaller of the two packs to eliminate it quickly. Clearing one side restores a safe retreat route and lets you face the remaining swarm from a single direction.
Finally, defeated enemies drop XP gems on the tiles where they fall. Backpedaling indefinitely leaves these gems trapped behind living enemy lines, which starves your crawler of in-combat level-ups. Use directional cleaves to punch a hole through weakened waves, then step forward onto those cleared tiles to collect your gems before the wave timer or Grim Reaper escalates the encounter difficulty. If you have summon allies such as Poe, position them to guard secondary openings while you secure the main drop zone.

This saved me time in the early game.
This helped me understand strategy much better.
Can you add more details about strategy in a future update?
Nice guide. I am checking the other Vampire Crawlers articles next.
