To beat Level 79 in Vita Mahjong, dismantle the dense central stacks before clearing outer pairs. Level 79 features a tall central formation flanked by flat lateral wings. Clearing wing tiles too early eliminates matches you will need later to uncover buried layers in the middle.
Board Layout and Tile Rules
Level 79 arranges standard solitaire mahjong tiles into three key structures:
- The Central Ridge: A formation stacked three to four layers deep. These overlapping tiles conceal the majority of the board's hidden duplicates.
- The Lateral Wings: Symmetrical, single-layer rows on the left and right edges. Most wing tiles have an unblocked lateral edge at the start.
- The Base Footing: A wide row running underneath the layout that anchors the upper stacks.
A tile is selectable only when no tile rests on top of it and at least one lateral side (left or right) is completely open. Standard suits (Dots, Bamboo, Characters) and Honor tiles (Winds, Dragons) have four identical copies per board. Flower and Season sets are wild within their category: any Flower matches another Flower, and any Season matches another Season.
Clear Strategy: Center Versus Perimeter
The most common failure on Level 79 is immediately matching visible wing tiles. If you remove two matching wing tiles, the remaining two copies may be trapped directly atop each other inside the central stack, causing an unwinnable layout.
| Clear Choice | Immediate Result | Strategic Risk |
|---|---|---|
| Wing Pair | Clears two visible tiles quickly | Leaves center stacks tall; risks early deadlocks |
| Center + Wing | Uncovers center tiles while freeing edge space | Optimal; preserves safe exit pairs |
| Center Pair | Reduces vertical stack height directly | High value; unlocks multiple adjacent tiles |
Follow these matching rules during the round:
- Target the Top Layer First: Always match tiles on the highest tier of the center stack to open the tiles beneath them.
- Pair Center with Edge: If you have three identical tiles visible (one in the center and two on the wings), match the center tile with an edge tile. Never pair the two edge tiles together, which strands the center tile until the final copy appears.
- Use Flowers and Seasons Aggressively: Because any Flower pairs with any Flower, use them immediately if one sits on an elevated center stack to peel away vertical height.
Preventing Trapped Tiles and Using Boosters
Vertical locking occurs when the only remaining copies of a suit are stacked vertically in the same column.
- Check Reveal Outcomes: Before matching a pair, check if removing the top tile frees up side edges for neighboring tiles or simply exposes a dead end.
- Track the Fourth Copy: If you match one pair of a suit and later see a third copy open, locate the fourth before using it. If the fourth copy is hidden, it sits inside an uncleared stack. Clear the stack covering it before expending the third copy.
If you reach a difficult board state, use the available in-game tools in this order:
- Undo: Deploy Undo immediately if clearing a match reveals its duplicate directly underneath, creating a column deadlock. Backtrack and find an alternate sequence.
- Hint: Use Hint when center moves appear blocked. It identifies valid edge-to-center combinations you may have missed.
- Shuffle: Save Shuffle as an emergency measure when no legal moves remain on the board. Shuffle randomizes all remaining unlocked tiles, which resets your board state but breaks deadlocks.

Can you add more details about strategy in a future update?
Nice guide. I am checking the other Vita Mahjong articles next.
This saved me time in the early game.
I wish I had read this before upgrading the wrong thing.
