To clear levels 1701 through 1710 in Vita Mahjong, prioritize matching tiles off the highest vertical stacks before clearing flat perimeter pieces. High central towers conceal the largest volume of hidden tiles. Removing flat edge tiles too early eliminates the reserve matches needed to pair with tiles exposed later from deep within the board.
Clearance Priorities by Tile Formation
In Mahjong solitaire rules, a tile is playable only when it has no tile resting on top of it and at least one lateral side (left or right) completely free. When evaluating opening moves across this stage tier, categorize visible tiles by the structural threat they pose:
| Tile Formation Type | Clearance Priority | Tactical Objective |
|---|---|---|
| High Towers (3–5 layers) | Highest | Reveals buried tiles and expands playable options across the board. |
| Split Four-of-a-Kind Sets | High | Unlocks multiple layers at once without leaving stranded single tiles. |
| Overlapping Lateral Wings | Moderate | Opens access to trapped interior pieces along horizontal rows. |
| Single-Layer Perimeter Tiles | Low (Reserve) | Preserved as match buffers to pair with newly uncovered deep tiles. |
Levels 1701 through 1705 feature heavy vertical columns stacked three to five tiles deep. Target the tops of these columns immediately. Clearing a cap uncovers the tile directly beneath it, expanding your matching pool. If you eliminate free single-layer perimeter tiles first, you risk discovering an exposed column tile later with no matching partner left on the board.
Dismantling Lateral Wings in Levels 1706–1708
Levels 1706 through 1708 shift board layouts toward wide horizontal wings that pin down central stacks. Long single-file lines require you to clear the outermost guard tile before any interior tile in the row becomes accessible.
Navigate these lateral bottlenecks using the following sequence:
- Check for cross-formation pairings: Look for matches where an outer wing tile pairs with a tile on top of a tall column. This shortens a restrictive lateral line while lowering a vertical stack in a single move.
- Avoid unproductive wing matches: Do not match an outer wing tile with another perimeter tile if the move leaves the row blocked by the very next adjacent piece without revealing a new playable option.
- Clear inward systematically: Only dismantle wing guards when freeing the row directly opens access to trapped central columns.
Managing Winds, Dragons, and Specialty Suits
Honor and specialty tiles require careful tracking because of how their sets are structured:
- Winds and Dragons: Unlike standard numbered suits (Characters, Dots, and Bamboo) that run from 1 through 9, Wind tiles (East, South, West, North) and Dragon tiles (Red, Green, White) consist of only four identical copies per type. Before matching two exposed Dragons or Winds, scan the board to find the other two. If the remaining two copies are buried deep beneath separate columns, match the exposed pair immediately to keep board movement fluid. If one copy is buried and the other is near the top of an adjacent stack, hold your move until pairing them will not trap a lower tile.
- Flowers and Seasons: Any Flower tile pairs with any other Flower tile, and any Season tile pairs with any other Season tile. Treat these four-tile sets as flexible wild cards to remove stubborn bottleneck tiles on lateral wings or tall columns.
Preventing Deadlocks and Bottlenecks in Levels 1709–1710
Levels 1709 and 1710 introduce dense checkerboard overlaps where clearing active pairs without a plan triggers a "No More Moves" state.
Apply these rules before selecting an available match:
- Does the match uncover a hidden tile? Take the match immediately if it exposes a face-down or covered piece on a tall stack.
- Does the match sit on an open single-layer wing? Hold the pair in reserve if neither tile frees another piece. Treat open edge tiles as reserve currency for when deep tiles are revealed later.
- Does the match free lateral access? Take the match if removing the tile opens the left or right side of a trapped stack tile.
In the final 20 to 30 tiles of level 1710, watch for identical tiles stacked vertically. If a 4-Dot rests directly on top of another 4-Dot, they cannot pair with each other. You must locate and free the other two 4-Dots on the board to peel the stack apart without deadlocking the run.

The explanation is clear, especially for beginners.
Nice guide. I am checking the other Vita Mahjong articles next.
I tried this today and it worked better than my old setup.
The tips are practical and easy to follow.
