If your attacks land in Where Winds Meet but fail to interrupt an enemy, your action has lower move priority than the opponent's current animation state or hit an active armor or parry window. To maintain offensive pressure without leaving yourself open to counter-attacks, evaluate move priority before committing to long skills and use Jade Fan (Yu Shan) guard-break animation cancels to skip recovery frames.
How Attack Priority and Interruption Work
Combat in Where Winds Meet resolves simultaneous actions through an internal move-state hierarchy based on animation weight. When two attacks collide, the move assigned the higher priority state takes precedence.
- Soft Attacks: Fast attacks with low recovery times. Use these during neutral play to test enemy reactions safely without committing to long animations.
- Hard Attacks: High-damage, high-commitment skills with long startup or recovery phases. Save these heavy attacks for moments when an opponent is already crowd-controlled, knocked down, or locked into a long recovery animation.
- Interruption Triggers: Moves only interrupt an enemy if your attack's priority value exceeds the opponent's current stance weight. Standard skills with long wind-up animations remain vulnerable to interruption unless they explicitly grant hyper-armor or break-immunity.
Canceling Jade Fan Guard-Break Animations
The Jade Fan style uses animation canceling to eliminate recovery frames after guard-breaking attacks, turning heavy commitments into fluid pressure.
- Execute the Guard Break: Initiate your break-defense or guard-break attack against the target.
- Cancel the Recovery: The instant the hit connects, input a dash or a secondary skill command to cut off the end-of-attack recovery animation.
- Reset or Parry: Bypassing the recovery frames lets you immediately return to a neutral stance or execute a parry if the opponent attempts an instant counter.
Stamina Management: Animation cancels consume stamina rapidly. Avoid spamming cancels repeatedly without monitoring your stamina gauge, as running out of stamina prevents dodging when enemies break out of your combo.
Why Enemy Animations Ignore Your Hits
If a hit visually connects but fails to stagger your target, one of four combat interaction mechanics is active:
- Glinting Weapons and Auras: Visual glints or weapon auras signify an active parry window. Striking an enemy in this state stuns or knocks back your character.
- Boss and Elite Hyper-Armor: High-tier enemies frequently possess built-in hyper-armor during specific skill sequences. Standard attacks cannot interrupt hyper-armor regardless of hit count; back away until the enemy finishes the action.
- Invincibility Frames (I-Frames): Select high-level skills grant full damage immunity during their startup or active frames.
- Maximum Range Spacing: Hitting an enemy at the tip of your attack range can cause hitbox registration to favor the opponent's active strike. Position your character closer to the center of the target model to ensure hit priority registers correctly.

Nice guide. I am checking the other Where Winds Meet articles next.
This helped me understand strategy much better.
I wish I had read this before upgrading the wrong thing.
Can you add more details about strategy in a future update?
