To survive and progress in Valheim without using walking, running, jumping, or swimming controls, you must rely on physical object collisions, structural elevation, and vessel transport. Your primary land movement comes from pushing your character with cart hitboxes, while boats handle ocean travel. Success requires building compact static bases, fighting exclusively with ranged weapons behind defensive traps, and keeping repair stations within arm's reach at all times.

Moving on Land via Cart Collision

Without standard movement inputs, the cart serves as your primary vehicle on land. By placing a cart ahead of your character and repeatedly interacting with it, you force its physical collision box into your character model, nudging yourself forward across the ground.

  • Clear your path: Uneven ground, rocks, and debris stop cart momentum. Clear stumps and debris along your path or place flat wood floor panels across rough terrain.
  • Build elevation ramps: To climb inclines without jumping, construct wood stairs and sloping ramps. Position yourself at the base and use the cart's collision box to nudge your character up the ramp into building range.

Building a Compact Static Base

Base management in a zero-movement run requires consolidating all essential crafting and storage facilities within interaction distance of a single static position.

  1. Select high-density sites: Place your main crafting location directly on a coastline or adjacent to rich wood and stone nodes so resources can be harvested without traveling.
  2. Build in a tight circle: Arrange your workbench, forge, bed, and storage chests around your fixed standing spot so every inventory slot and craft menu remains accessible.
  3. Store repair materials within reach: Keep raw wood and stone in chests immediately next to your standing point to maintain repair tools without stepping away.

Managing Combat and Boss Encounters

Lacking mobility makes melee combat extremely risky because you cannot dodge attacks or step back from incoming strikes.

  • Rely on bows: Fight strictly at range using bows and arrows to kill enemies before they close the distance.
  • Construct choke points: Build narrow walls or raised platforms around your position to force incoming enemies into single-file corridors.
  • Trap bosses in pits: Before summoning a boss, dig deep pits or build stone walls to immobilize the target.
  • Position mid-combat repair stations: Enclose a workbench directly behind your fighting stance so you can repair damaged shields and bow durability during prolonged encounters.

Sailing and Avoiding Soft-Locks

Boats are the only effective method for traveling across biomes and oceans when land movement is constrained.

  • Control direction via steering: Once aboard a vessel, rely entirely on the rudder controls to direct travel.
  • Construct deep-water piers: Build wooden piers extending into deep water so you can board and dock without needing to swim or wade through shallow water.
  • Avoid sandbars: Plan sailing routes around shallow coastlines, as dislodging a grounded boat without walking is nearly impossible.
  • Maintain backup bases: Build small secondary shelters along key shorelines and hold spare boat supplies to avoid soft-locking your game if your primary vessel is destroyed at sea.
