To perform a Parry Assist (Defensive Assist) in Zenless Zone Zero, press the switch character input when an enemy flashes yellow while you have at least one Assist Point. The game automatically switches to an off-field melee or shield Agent, parrying the incoming blow, negating damage, and stopping the enemy's attack sequence.
Immediately after the parry connects and the screen pauses in hit-stop, press your Basic Attack or Special Attack button to trigger an Assist Follow-Up. This follow-up strike deals amplified Daze to rapidly stagger the enemy.
Defensive Assist vs. Evasive Assist
Not every Agent deflects incoming attacks. An off-field character performs either a Defensive Assist or an Evasive Assist depending on their combat profile:
- Defensive Assist (Parry): Executed by frontline melee damage dealers, Stun units, and Defense specialists. This deflects the strike, interrupts the enemy's combo string, and builds heavy Daze.
- Evasive Assist (Dodge): Executed by ranged and certain anomaly Agents (such as Nicole, Rina, and Grace). Instead of halting the boss, the incoming Agent dodges through the strike in slow motion without deflecting the impact.
If your primary goal against aggressive bosses is to halt attack chains and build Daze, ensure the character receiving the switch has a Defensive Assist.
Assist Point Costs and Multi-Hit Parries
Defensive Assists depend on your Assist Point pool displayed on the squad interface.
| Assist Condition | Assist Point Cost | Result and Action Required |
|---|---|---|
| Standard Strike | 1 Point | Deflects the attack instantly. Press Basic or Special Attack to execute a counter follow-up. |
| Multi-Hit Attack | 1 to 2 Points per hit | Requires consecutive switch inputs to deflect each incoming blow in the combo sequence. |
| Zero Points Remaining | 0 Points | Triggers an unassisted character swap without invulnerability frames, leaving the incoming Agent open to damage. |
When your pool is exhausted, the switch icon displays a red cross-out indicator. Assist Points recover naturally during combat through landing Chain Attacks during Stun phases or activating Ultimate abilities. Save your defensive switch inputs for heavy or dangerous strikes rather than expending them on minor hits.
Supported Defensive Assist Roster
To guarantee a parry instead of an evasive dodge, rotate into one of the following melee-oriented Agents:
- Frontline Defense and Stun: Ben Bigger, Seth Lowell, Koleda Belobog, Caesar King, Anby Demara, and Von Lycaon.
- Melee Attackers: Soldier 11, Ellen Joe, Corin Wickes, and Nekomata.
Squad Positioning for Parry Assists
The assist mechanic summons the adjacent character in your squad order based on your switch direction. If an Evasive Assist unit (such as Nicole or Grace) is placed directly after your active driver, pressing switch during a yellow flash will trigger a dodge rather than a parry.
To maintain reliable parry availability:
- Place a Defensive Assist Agent immediately after your main on-field character in the squad lineup.
- React to yellow attack flashes by tapping the switch button.
- Follow the deflection with a Basic or Special Attack command before resuming your standard damage rotation.

Good guide for Zenless Zone Zero players. The strategy part was useful.
This saved me time in the early game.
I tried this today and it worked better than my old setup.
This guide answered the exact question I had.
