To execute an Orchard strategy in 9 Kings, build your deck around units that generate Vine tiles, place scaling units on those tiles, and safeguard your board state with non-Vine support units. This playstyle trades early aggression for exponential stat growth over time.

Drafting Vine Generators and Scaling Units

The Orchard build requires establishing early tile control to empower your army. Draft cards based on two specific functions:

  • Vine Generators: Prioritize units that spawn Vines on summon, at turn end, or onto adjacent tiles. Adjacent growth creates a rapid chain reaction across the board.
  • Vine-Empowered Units: Draft units labeled as Vine-Eaters or Vine-Empowered. These units gain passive attack and health bonuses for every occupied Vine tile, converting tile coverage directly into combat power.

Without consistent Vine generation, empowered units remain weak. Secure generator cards early before committing your entire strategy to plant scaling.

Board Positioning and Space Management

Because Vines and units consume significant space, poor placement can clog your board and restrict future card plays.

  1. Place generators in the center or back lines: Keeping your Vine engines behind your combat units protects them from direct enemy attacks and ensures continuous tile generation.
  2. Push empowered units to the front line: Deploy your combat units in forward zones where your Vine network expands, guaranteeing they receive stat boosts as soon as combat starts.
  3. Reserve open tiles for tactical plays: Avoid filling every open spot immediately so you retain space for mid-game support units or spell cards.

Deck Structure and Mitigating Board Clears

The Big Deck Rework update altered optimal deck sizes for passive setup strategies. Running a hyper-thin deck makes it difficult to survive early turns while waiting for Vines to take root.

  • Expand deck utility: Include board-clear cards, defensive spells, and mid-game support units to buy time during early rounds.
  • Draft high-impact anchor units: Always hold at least two strong units that operate independently of Vine mechanics. If an opponent wipes your board or clears your Vine tiles, these anchor units provide the raw damage needed to stay alive while your card cycle rebuilds the network.
