To survive early combat encounters in Absolum, prioritize room positioning near edges, thin out hostile groups using environmental hazards, and rely on dash-canceling to minimize attack recovery frames.

Because base stats and damage output are limited early in a run, taking trades against aggressive enemy clusters quickly depletes health. Managing space and offensive movement keeps control over early rooms before enemies overwhelm your character.

Thin Enemy Groups with Environmental Hazards

Rushing directly into the center of a room often leads to being surrounded. Instead of engaging every target in close-quarters melee right away, look for interactable environmental objects around the area.

  • Explosive Barrels: Position yourself near explosive barrels and wait for incoming enemies to bunch together. Triggering an explosion hits multiple units with area-of-effect damage simultaneously, significantly cutting down enemy density.
  • Debris: Pick up and throw debris at oncoming targets to soften up groups from a safe distance before committing to your melee attack combo.

Using hazards first conserves defensive cooldowns and preserves your character's health for later encounters.

Cancel Attack Recovery with Dash Commands

Full attack strings in Absolum leave your hero stationary and vulnerable to counterattacks during recovery animations. To maintain offensive momentum while avoiding damage:

  1. Perform your initial strike or attack string.
  2. Input a dash command immediately after the hit lands.
  3. Reposition instantly to hit from a new angle or step outside incoming strike zones.

This technique, known as dash-canceling, skips lengthy recovery frames so you can weave between enemy attacks.

Dash Resource Management

Dashes depend on stamina or cooldown timers. Avoid using dashes for routine movement across clear spaces. If you exhaust your dash resource prematurely, your character will be caught in attack recovery when an enemy strikes. Reserve your dash strictly for canceling committed attack animations or escaping sudden closing pincer attacks.

Maintain Spacing and Room Positioning

Enemies naturally attempt to circle your position to create blind-spot attacks. To counter this tendency:

  • Stay Near Edges: Move along the perimeter of the room and keep your back toward open space to eliminate rear attacks.
  • Use Circular Movement: Travel in wide arcs around the room to keep all visible threats in your forward line of sight.
  • Isolate Fast Targets: When a quick or high-threat unit breaks away, dash toward them to secure a temporary one-on-one trade away from the main group.
  • Use Verticality: Jump onto available platforms or higher ground to disrupt enemy line of sight and break up tight surrounds.
