Absolum Combat Guide: Positioning and Enemy Crowd Control

To survive combat encounters in Absolum, shift your character along the vertical Z-axis to avoid standing directly in enemy lines of sight, wait for wind-up animations before attacking, and immediately eliminate ranged or crowd-control targets upon entering a room.

Z-Axis Movement and Positioning

Absolum uses traditional belt-scrolling combat mechanics where enemy attacks depend heavily on horizontal alignment. Standing directly in front of a group leaves your hero vulnerable to incoming strikes and chip damage.

To manage incoming attacks:

• Shift Vertically: Use your dash to move up or down on the screen rather than retreating straight backward.
• Bait Enemy Strikes: Step into an enemy's line of sight briefly to trigger their attack animation, then step off the horizontal plane into empty space.
• Funnel Groups: Position your character so that approaching enemies line up behind one another, preventing them from surrounding you.

Reading Enemy Telegraphs

Every mob type in Absolum features visual "tells" or wind-up animations before launching strikes, heavy attacks, or projectiles. Button-mashing into an aggressive enemy group usually results in rapid health loss, especially against heavy elites.

When an enemy begins a wind-up animation, pause your aggressive combo and execute a dodge maneuver. Once the enemy commits to their attack string and enters their recovery phase, retaliate with a primary combo string.

Room Clearing Sequence

Treat every combat arena in Talamh as a strategic puzzle rather than a continuous brawl. Execute the following sequence when entering a new room:

1. Scan the Environment: Check the room immediately for hazards, traps, and enemy spawn locations.
2. Target Ranged and Crowd-Control Mobs: Move directly toward enemies with projectile abilities or crowd-control attacks to eliminate them before focusing on melee units.
3. Break Pinning Crowds: If your hero becomes surrounded, use a knockback ability or heavy strike on the nearest threat to clear a path.
4. Clean Up Melee Foes: Finish the remaining melee enemies by baiting their telegraphed attacks and punishing their wind-down frames.
