In Absolum, surviving difficult encounters requires using your dash invincibility frames (i-frames) and room positioning to avoid damage, then immediately moving in to attack during boss recovery windows. Rather than standing still or trying to tank incoming hits, treat mobility as your primary defense against heavy projectile streams and wide area-of-effect attacks.
Dash Execution and I-Frame Timing
The dash provides temporary invincibility that neutralizes incoming attacks when timed correctly. Rely on specific timing and directional rules to avoid taking damage:
- Timing: Trigger the dash right as a projectile or strike is about to make contact with your character, rather than when the enemy first fires or starts their attack animation.
- Direction: Dash directly through incoming attacks or perpendicular to the enemy's line of fire. Dashing straight away from an attack keeps your character inside the threat's active hitbox for longer.
- Cooldown Management: Save your dash for evasion. Avoid using it just to close distance on an enemy unless you know they are locked in a post-attack cooldown state.
Arena Positioning and Hazard Management
Static positioning exposes you to environmental traps and wide boss attacks. Managing the space around your hero keeps dodge paths open:
- Perimeter Kiting: Rotate around the outer edges of the room to pull enemies along the arena boundary. This forces enemy targeting to track your arc, causing linear attacks to miss and granting extra time to react to projectiles.
- Center Control: Whenever you are forced to retreat to an edge or corner, reset your position toward the center of the arena as soon as it is safe. Staying near the center gives you space to dodge in any direction.
- Environmental Hazards: If floor hazards or zone attacks cover your position, abandon your current combo immediately to relocate to clear ground. Sacrificing a few hits is safer than standing in damage-over-time areas.
Punishing Boss Recovery Windows
Minimizing boss fight duration requires turning defensive dodges into immediate counter-attacks:
- Identify Pattern Dead Zones: Observe wind-up animations to distinguish straight projectile lines from circular waves, then position yourself in the gaps within the pattern to preserve your dash.
- Slide Into Hitboxes: When a boss completes a major attack sequence, use the end of your final dodge to move directly into their hitbox.
- Unload Damage During Downtime: Execute your burst attack while the boss remains stationary during their post-attack recovery animation, then clear out before the next wind-up begins.
