To beat Level 394 in Block Out, immediately empty one tube to serve as a reusable buffer. Level 394 scatters colors across tightly packed containers, trapping matching segments under single orphan blocks. Shifting blocks without an open slot causes quick deadlocks, so your opening priority is consolidating exposed matching tops until one full container is completely cleared.
Level 394 Strategy Overview
Sorting Level 394 requires dividing your moves across three distinct phases.
| Phase | Main Objective | Tactical Focus |
|---|---|---|
| Opening Phase | Establish first empty tube | Consolidate top layers onto identical partial stacks |
| Mid Phase | Reveal buried matching segments | Cycle single colors through the dedicated buffer space |
| Closing Phase | Finalize full color sets | Lock completed tubes and resolve remaining paired units |
Step 1: Open an Early Buffer Tube
Do not distribute top blocks randomly across partially filled tubes. Reserve your capacity by finding the quickest path to a fully empty tube:
- Scan the board for the container that has the lowest total volume or features the highest concentration of identical top blocks.
- Transfer those surface blocks onto other tubes that already have the matching color on top.
- Preserve partial stacks that already hold two or more matching blocks in sequence to avoid unnecessary sorting later.
- Keep the emptied container completely vacant. Treat it as a temporary pass-through lane rather than a permanent storage slot for unmatched blocks.
Step 2: Uncover Buried Segments
Once you have a free buffer tube, address the mid-layer color traps:
- Check beneath orphan blocks: Only move an obstructing top block into your empty buffer if that transfer immediately exposes two or more matching blocks underneath.
- Consolidate uncovered colors: Shift the newly exposed matching blocks directly into their permanent tube, then immediately transfer the orphan block out of the buffer onto a matching color.
- Protect tube depth: Avoid placing an incompatible color on top of a tube that is already three-quarters full. Doing so removes that tube from play for several turns.
Step 3: Prevent Mid-Game Stalemates
As you begin locking down full colors, watch out for complementary locks where two tubes each hold the base color needed by the other:
- Target high-frequency colors first: If you have three matching blocks gathered and the final block is trapped under one foreign piece, clear the foreign piece into your buffer, transfer the final block to complete the set, and lock that tube.
- Eliminate colors permanently: Fully completed tubes cannot accept further moves, which permanently reduces board complexity and frees up adjacent matching targets.
Step 4: Resolve the Final Tubes
When only two or three colors remain scattered, precise move sequencing prevents mutual blocking:
- Confirm that your target destination has enough open units to accept the full set before moving its top layer.
- Keep your dedicated buffer tube empty until the second-to-last color set is completed.
- Cycle the top segments back and forth through the buffer until both bottom colors align in their respective tubes.
- Consolidate the base color into its permanent container, then pour the final color set into the last remaining tube to clear the stage.

I tried this today and it worked better than my old setup.
Nice guide. I am checking the other Block Out articles next.
This guide answered the exact question I had.
Good guide for Block Out players. The strategy part was useful.
