To clear Level 42 in Block Out, your immediate goal is to empty one column completely so it can function as a temporary transfer buffer. The puzzle begins with mixed color layers distributed across parallel columns. Because blocks can only move onto a matching color or into an entirely vacant column, failing to secure an open workspace early will quickly stall your board.

Target the column with the fewest mixed layers, move its top blocks onto identical exposed colors in adjacent lanes, and keep the resulting empty slot free to cycle buried pieces.

Step 1: Open a Dedicated Transfer Column

Before moving any pieces, survey the top layer of each column. Stacking rules require that any incoming block must land on a block of the exact same color unless the destination column is completely empty.

  1. Locate the column with the fewest block layers or the least color variety.
  2. Transfer its exposed blocks onto matching stacks elsewhere on the board.
  3. If an odd block must be parked temporarily, place it only where it can be matched and cleared on the following turn.
  4. Once the column is completely clear, keep it open as a sorting channel rather than storing permanent pieces there.

Step 2: Uncover Buried Base Blocks

Level 42 contains mutual color dependencies where target colors sit trapped under mismatched tops in multiple columns. For example, if blue blocks sit trapped beneath red, and red blocks sit beneath blue, you must shift pieces to favor whichever color has the most visible matching segments.

  • Shift top blocks toward stacks that need the fewest pieces to complete.
  • Never place a block on top of a color you will need within your next two or three moves.
  • Consolidate matching segments immediately once lower layers are revealed.

Maintaining direct access to partially assembled colors ensures you do not inadvertently bury pieces you need to finish an active stack.

Step 3: Prevent Deadlocks and Finish the Stage

A board deadlock occurs when every column displays a different surface color and no vacant space remains to accept a transfer. To avoid an irreversible fail state, follow these board-management rules:

  • Keep the buffer clean: End every multi-step sequence by clearing your open column back to zero blocks.
  • Avoid spreading colors: Do not start building the same color in two separate incomplete columns.
  • Check remaining space: Track column capacity before shifting multiple blocks to ensure the destination can hold the entire incoming segment.

Once you fully assemble and lock the first color stack, the board opens up significantly. Use the extra clearance to alternate the remaining two colors between your active columns until every color group is unified.
