To maximize the Grand Warden's Fireball equipment in Clash of Clans, target large-footprint structures such as 4x4 defenses or the Town Hall. The Fireball does not calculate its area of effect from a single center point on the grid. Instead, the blast radius radiates outward from the outer perimeter of the target building. Hitting larger structures expands the total coverage area, allowing the explosion to reach defenses across multiple compartments.

How Target Footprints Change Blast Coverage

Because the blast originates from the edge of the targeted structure's hitbox, a larger anchor building pushes the explosion's outer boundary further across the base. Neighboring structures receive full damage as long as their outer hitbox touches the edge of the Fireball's blast radius.

Targeting small structures pulls the explosion envelope inward, which often causes the blast to fall just short of adjacent defenses separated by walls or empty buffer tiles.

Measuring Splash Reach on Defenses

When scouting a base layout, count tile distances from the outer border of your intended target rather than estimating from center to center:

  • Outer-edge calculation: A 4x4 building extends two full tiles from its center in every direction. Striking it pushes the Fireball's reach one to two tiles further outward than striking a 2x2 or 3x3 structure in the same location.
  • Hitbox clipping: Surrounding defenses do not need to be centered within the blast circle. As long as the fringe of the explosion touches any portion of a defense's boundary box, that building takes full damage.
  • Buffer spacing: If an enemy Scattershot or Monolith is separated from an anchor structure by a two-tile gap, targeting a 4x4 anchor will catch it, whereas targeting an adjacent 3x3 defense may miss the perimeter of that same target.

Forcing the Grand Warden onto Large Targets

Because the Grand Warden targets the nearest structure or supports nearby units, you must control his pathing before activating the Fireball:

  1. Funnel with a Warden Walk: Use Healers to support the Warden along the perimeter to clear away low-value 2x2 and 3x3 trash buildings before triggering the ability.
  2. Mask unwanted anchors with Invisibility: Drop an Invisibility Spell on nearby low-priority defenses or resource storages. This temporarily removes them from the Warden's targeting pool and forces his artificial intelligence to retarget the larger core structure behind them.
  3. Trigger at lock-on: Wait until the Grand Warden actively locks onto the desired 4x4 or 3x3 anchor before activating his ability. Activating while he is still attacking a perimeter building wastes the explosion on a low-value zone.

Supporting the Strike with Spells

  • Earthquake Spells: High-durability structures like the Monolith, Spell Towers, and the Town Hall can survive flat Fireball damage. Drop an Earthquake Spell beforehand to strip a percentage of total hitpoints and weaken walls, ensuring the Fireball one-shots the remaining defenses.
  • Invisibility Spells on the Warden: If heavy incoming fire threatens the Warden before he steps within range of the target anchor, place an Invisibility Spell directly on him to reset defensive targeting and give him time to walk into position.

Common Targeting Mistakes

  • Triggering on 2x2 buildings: Striking an exposed Builder's Hut or popped Tesla contracts the explosion envelope and leaves primary core targets standing.
  • Premature activation on storages: Activating the ability while the Warden is still chipping through perimeter resource structures wastes the splash damage on non-defensive zones.
  • Tornado Trap displacement: Funneling the Warden into an un-triggered Tornado Trap will displace him and alter his firing line, causing him to lock onto an unintended structure.
