To execute the Hydra attack in Clash of Clans, clear two outer flanks to funnel the core, deploy a spread line of Dragons followed immediately by Dragon Riders, and trigger the Grand Warden’s Eternal Tome over high-damage defensive clusters.

Core Army Roles and Unit Synergy

The Hydra strategy pairs high-health Dragons with defense-targeting Dragon Riders. Standard Dragons attack any structure, which often stalls pushes against high-hitpoint resource storages while deep defenses deal uncontested damage. Dragon Riders ignore non-defensive buildings, bypassing resource clutter to snipe primary threats while the Dragons tank incoming fire.

Step 1: Establish the Flank Funnels

If the air pack spreads along the outside of the base rather than pushing straight through the core, the attack will fail. Carve two clear boundaries before sending in the main armada:

  1. Deploy the Barbarian King and Archer Queen along one outer flank. Use them to pick off perimeter buildings, clear boundary defenses, and eliminate defending enemy heroes without pulling fire from the center of the base.
  2. Deploy your Siege Machine on the opposite flank. A Flame Flinger or Siege Barracks placed across from your hero funnel can strip an entire edge without spell support.
  3. Alternative Blimp entry: If you use a Battle Blimp to snipe the Town Hall or a dense core compartment, skip the siege flank cut and send the Blimp directly behind the main air fleet under the Grand Warden’s aura.

Step 2: Deploy the Main Air Wave

Deploy the air fleet along the entry corridor in a wide line rather than clustering them on a single tile:

  1. Drop a test line of 4 to 6 Balloons across your entry path to trigger hidden Seeking Air Mines, Air Bombs, and Tornado Traps.
  2. Spread your Dragons directly behind the Balloons to absorb sustained defensive fire and clear foreground structures.
  3. Release your Dragon Riders directly behind the Dragons. Keeping them layered behind the main Dragons shields them from single-target locks while they path toward internal defenses.
  4. Deploy the Grand Warden in air mode directly behind the center of the air push to keep his protective aura over both flight lines.

Step 3: Time Grand Warden Abilities and Spells

The timing of your Grand Warden ability determines whether the Dragon Riders survive the base core:

  • Town Hall Explosion: Activate Eternal Tome just as the fleet enters the Town Hall compartment to nullify Giga Inferno damage and the final detonation shockwave.
  • Early Core Bursts: If the pack enters range of multiple Scattershots and Spell Towers early, pop the Tome immediately to maintain troop momentum and protect the Dragon Riders.
  • Equipment Combinations: Pair Eternal Tome with the Healing Tome or Rage Gem to quickly restore lost health or boost flight speed through dense defensive clusters.

Manage crowd control and lethal single-target defenses with active spell placement:

  • Freeze Spells: Drop a Freeze Spell on an active Air Sweeper as soon as its charge animation begins. Use remaining Freeze Spells to reset escalating beams from Single-Target Infernos or freeze the Monolith.
  • Rage Spells: Cast Rage Spells directly ahead of your advancing dragons rather than on top of them, accelerating them into the next compartment.
  • Distraction Spells: Drop Skeleton Spells or Invisibility Spells to tie up defending heroes or distract a Monolith while Dragon Riders close the distance.

Step 4: Deploy the Royal Champion and Cleanup Units

Hold the Royal Champion during the opening phase. Deploying her with the initial wave exposes her to perimeter ground fire while defenses are fully active.

Once the main air pack destroys the core defenses, identify exterior defensive pockets or lagging compartments that threaten to redirect surviving troops. Deploy the Royal Champion directly toward these secondary targets to clear them with her seeking shield. Immediately scatter reserved Minions or Baby Dragons behind the main pack on cleared compartments to eliminate remaining trash buildings and secure the three-star victory within the time limit.
