To protect your Town Hall 9 village against three-star war attacks in Clash of Clans, construct an asymmetrical layout that isolates the Archer Queen and Clan Castle while offsetting the Town Hall toward the exterior. Symmetric designs make pathing predictable and allow opposing armies to wipe out major objectives simultaneously. By sacrificing the Town Hall on an outer flank, you protect critical defensive structures and break the standardized pathing required by popular TH9 war armies such as Zap Dragon, LavaLoon, Witch Slap, and GoHog.

Core Layout Architecture

An anti-3-star layout relies on compartmentalization and centralized disruption rather than guarding the center with the Town Hall.

  • Offset the Town Hall: Position the Town Hall in an outer compartment or exterior layer. This forces the attacker to commit heavy troops early for a two-star push or enter from the opposite side to reach high-value targets, rarely leaving enough resources to secure the full three stars.
  • Deeply Centralize the Clan Castle: Keep the Clan Castle in the innermost core. If an attacker can lure defensive troops using a single Hog Rider or Giant at the perimeter, they can easily pull and neutralize them with a Poison Spell. Forcing a deep push burns the opponent's troop space and spell slots early.
  • Isolate Hero Platforms: Keep your defensive Archer Queen separated from key anti-air assets. High-level attackers often deploy a King and Queen dive to trade heroes. If your Queen sits right beside an Air Defense and an Air Sweeper, losing that single compartment compromises the rest of the base to air attacks.
  • Control Compartment Dimensions: Build compartments wider than eight tiles across. The attacking Archer Queen has a five-tile range; narrow compartments allow her to shoot over walls into interior defenses without breaching inner wall layers.

Air Defense and Sweeper Spacing

Air strategies like Zap Dragon and LavaLoon exploit overlapping value. Stagger your four Air Defenses, two Air Sweepers, and splash defenses across separate quadrants to prevent Lightning Spells from disabling multiple key assets at once.

Defensive StructureOptimal PlacementKey Counter-Strategy
Air Defenses (4)Spread across 4 separate quadrants, 4+ tiles away from Wizard TowersDenies Lightning Spell value; stops Lava Hounds from absorbing splash damage meant for Balloons
Air Sweepers (2)Facing opposite directions toward primary entry routesPushes back Balloons and Dragons while breaking coordinated flight speed
X-Bows (2)Set to Ground & Air in inner secondary compartmentsProvides continuous covering fire across the base core against air swarms
Wizard Towers (4)Placed behind outer defenses, offset from Air DefensesShreds grouped Balloons when Lava Hounds lock onto distant Air Defenses

Ensure that an Air Defense and an Air Sweeper never share an adjacent wall junction. Supercell's Lightning Spell deals radius damage that can destroy adjacent targets in the same cast. Maintaining a minimum buffer of four tiles between primary air targets prevents full value from spell combinations.

Defending Ground Pathing Against Witches and Hogs

Ground assaults rely heavily on predictable troop pathing. GoHog and Witch Slap armies depend on funnels that funnel primary swarms toward high-value cores while back-end units clean up outer defenses.

Neutralizing Witch Slap

Witches rely on spawning Skeletons to tank point defenses while the main army moves around the perimeter. Place point defenses behind walls along the outer perimeter to target trailing Witches directly. Position Bomb Towers along common entry channels; a Bomb Tower's death explosion wipes out skeleton clusters immediately and deals heavy burst damage to nearby Witches.

Breaking Hog Rider Movement

Hog Riders ignore non-defensive buildings and travel the shortest straight-line distance between defensive structures. Avoid clustering defenses in tight circles, which allows Hog Riders to chain from target to target under Heal Spells. Introduce resource storages and wall buffers between defenses to stretch the pathing distance and force the pack to split into smaller, vulnerable groups.

Trap Placement Rules

Traps provide hidden value when attackers cannot scout them or safely heal through them.

  1. Place Spring Traps in Direct 1-Tile Defensive Gaps: Position Spring Traps directly between two adjacent defensive buildings within a compartment. Hog Riders, Giants, and Valkyries move in straight lines from defense to defense, stepping onto the trap and removing up to three units in a single trigger.
  2. Scatter Giant Bombs Separately: Avoid placing double Giant Bombs together in obvious internal pockets, where attackers routinely pre-cast Heal Spells. Instead, place individual Giant Bombs beside Bomb Towers or at the exits of high-damage compartments to force early spell use.
  3. Configure Skeleton Traps: Set Skeleton Traps to Ground to stall Hog Rider paths, or switch them to Air mode if opposing clans lean heavily on LavaLoon attacks to distract Balloons directly in the line of X-Bow fire.
