The five strongest defenses in Clash of Clans are the Monolith, Eagle Artillery, Inferno Tower, Scattershot, and Spell Tower. To prevent three-star attacks, place these structures within interior compartments separated by high-hitpoint storage buildings, dead space, and walls so enemy pushes cannot eliminate them simultaneously.

---

1. Monolith

The Monolith targets a single unit and deals base damage combined with a flat percentage of the target's maximum hit points. This percentage-based mechanic makes it equally lethal against high-health tanks like Root Riders, Golems, and Electro Titans, as well as high-level heroes such as the Barbarian King and Archer Queen.

Placement Rules

  • Isolate in an interior compartment: Position the Monolith out of direct melee reach over perimeter walls so attacking troops cannot target it without breaking inside.
  • Surround with decoys and high-HP buffers: Place Skeleton Traps and resource storages directly around the Monolith. These force heroes and tanks to absorb percentage-based strikes while spending time clearing decoy targets.
  • Guard against early spell investment: Attackers frequently commit Freeze Spells, Invisibility Spells, or Hero Equipment (such as the Giant Gauntlet) to eliminate the Monolith early. Forcing them to commit those resources before reaching the core blunts the rest of their push.

---

2. Eagle Artillery

The Eagle Artillery delivers long-range splash damage across the entire map. It activates once the attacker deploys a specific housing space threshold of troops, heroes, and siege machines, firing consecutive three-shell volleys that devastate clustered armies.

Placement Rules

  • Build an asymmetrical layout: Place the Eagle Artillery on the opposite side of the base from the Town Hall. Splitting these two key targets prevents an attacker from clearing both with a single main push or a Super Archer or Blizzard blimp.
  • Deep wall offset: Keep the Eagle deep enough behind walls to prevent an enemy Archer Queen from sniping it during an outside Queen Charge without dedicating Wall Breakers or Jump Spells.
  • Buffer against point snipers: Surround the Eagle with Hidden Teslas or Cannons to eliminate low-housing cleanup units and small decoys that attempt to waste its targeting volleys.

3. Inferno Towers

Inferno Towers offer critical defensive flexibility across multiple Town Hall tiers by switching between Single-Target and Multi-Target modes.

Inferno ModePrimary Target StrengthsMain WeaknessesRecommended Placement
Single-TargetHeavy tanks, heroes, and Siege MachinesSwarms, Witch bats, and Skeleton TrapsCore compartments protecting high-HP storages
Multi-TargetTroop swarms, Bats, Minions, and support unitsHigh-HP tank unitsFlanking pathways and choke points along hybrid paths

Mode Balance

A standard competitive layout typically runs at least one Single-Target Inferno near high-traffic hero entry points to stop brute-force charges, while configuring the remaining towers to Multi-Target mode to shred incoming support packs and swarm abilities.

---

4. Scattershots

The Scattershot fires heavy boulders that target both ground and air units. On impact, the projectile shatters into a cone of secondary shrapnel that hits units behind the primary target, neutralizing mid-health support troops like Bowlers, Super Archers, Miners, and Healers even when they hide behind a tank.

Placement Rules

  • Aim into troop funnels: Position Scattershots behind durable storages facing common entry paths. When tanks trigger the main blast, the cone sweeps through the support line following behind.
  • Cover the blind spot: The Scattershot cannot fire at units standing within its immediate point-blank radius. Place a Bomb Tower, Air Defense, or Hidden Tesla cluster nearby to handle close-range rushers.

---

5. Spell Towers

Available starting at Town Hall 15, Spell Towers cast automated spells when enemy troops enter their trigger range. They can be set to Rage, Poison, or Invisibility.

  • Rage Spell Tower: Increases the damage of neighboring defenses. Group it within range of the Monolith, Multi-Target Infernos, or X-Bows.
  • Poison Spell Tower: Deals damage over time while applying heavy movement and attack-speed slows to halt ground swarms and fast rushes.
  • Invisibility Spell Tower: Temporarily cloaks the Town Hall or nearby core defenses, forcing attacking units to retarget onto lower-priority structures while taking defensive fire.

Position Spell Towers centrally so their spell aura covers at least two major defensive structures without grouping those buildings closely enough to invite heavy Earthquake or Lightning Spell value.

Core Placement Checklist

To get full value from these key defenses, apply three structural layout rules:

  1. Avoid stacking win conditions: Never cluster the Town Hall, Eagle Artillery, and Monolith in the same quadrant where an attacker can disable all of them using Freeze Spells or the Grand Warden's Eternal Tome ability.
  2. Use non-walkable compartments: Enclose your Monolith, Eagle Artillery, and Scattershots in separate walled boxes to disrupt direct troop pathing.
  3. Layer high-HP buffer buildings: Place Clan Castles, Elixir Storages, and Gold Storages directly in front of your primary defenses to hold enemy troops under defensive fire for as long as possible.
