To win matches in the Clash Royale 20-Win Challenge with a Lava Hound beatdown deck, defend passively during single Elixir, identify your opponent's anti-air counters, and build multi-troop aerial pushes in double Elixir.
Deploying a seven-Elixir tank early leaves you vulnerable to fast counterattacks. Your primary goal in the first two minutes is to maintain tower health and manage trades until the increased Elixir rate allows you to support the Lava Hound effectively.
Core Deck Archetype and Card Functions
Lava Hound decks overwhelm opponents by creating aerial threats that bypass ground defenses. A tournament-ready deck pairs the Lava Hound with ranged air support, low-cost defensive cycle cards, and reactive spells.
| Card | Primary Role | Tactical Function |
|---|---|---|
| Lava Hound | Main Tank (7 Elixir) | Absorbs tower hits and bursts into Lava Pups upon death. |
| Balloon / Flying Machine | Secondary DPS / Win Condition | Targets buildings directly or snipes defensive units from range. |
| Mega Minion | Single-Target Air Defense | Eliminates medium-health units like Musketeer and opposing Balloons. |
| Skeleton Dragons | Splash Air Support | Clears defensive swarms such as Minions and Bats behind the tank. |
| Tombstone | Defensive Anchor (3 Elixir) | Distracts building-targeting win conditions like Hog Rider and Giant. |
| Guards | Ground Distraction | Shields withstand high-damage hits and spells against ground bridge spam. |
| Fireball | Heavy Direct Damage | Removes grouped ranged defenders like Wizard, Musketeer, or Flying Machine. |
| Zap / Arrows | Low-Cost Spell / Reset | Wipes low-health swarms and resets charge-up attacks like Inferno beams. |
Single Elixir: Conservative Defense and Scouting
Do not deploy the Lava Hound in the back during single Elixir unless your opponent commits high Elixir behind their King Tower with a heavy tank such as Golem or P.E.K.K.A. Dropping seven Elixir unprompted leaves you unable to defend an aggressive opposite-lane push.
- Place Tombstone centrally: Plant Tombstone three tiles from your King Tower in the center of the arena to pull incoming runners like Hog Rider, Battle Ram, or Prince.
- Cycle cheap units safely: If neither player makes a move, cycle Guards or Mega Minion behind the King Tower to force the opponent to reveal their cards.
- Track defensive counters: Track the opponent's anti-air units and spells (such as Poison, Fireball, or Arrows) so you can position your support units effectively later.
Double Elixir: Building the Push
Once double Elixir begins, initiate your offensive setup by placing the Lava Hound in the back corner tile behind the King Tower on the lane targeting the opponent's lowest-health Princess Tower. This corner placement maximizes travel time, giving you sufficient Elixir to stack support units before the Hound crosses the bridge.
- Stagger unit spacing: Deploy Flying Machine wide near the arena wall while placing Mega Minion or Skeleton Dragons toward the center. This wide spread prevents the opponent from catching multiple units in a single Fireball or Poison.
- Delay secondary attackers: Never deploy low-health air support ahead of the Lava Hound. Wait until the opposing Crown Tower locks onto the tank before releasing Balloon or Flying Machine.
- Support the pup burst: When the Lava Hound is about to pop, prepare Fireball or Zap to eliminate remaining anti-air troops. The eight spawned Lava Pups deal heavy damage when protected from splash units.
Managing Opposite-Lane Pressure
Opponents facing Lava Hound will often rush the opposite lane with fast threats like Elite Barbarians, Bandit, or Royal Hogs.
- Cap defensive spending: Do not spend more than four Elixir defending the opposite lane. Overcommitting defensively stalls your primary attack and leaves your Lava Hound isolated.
- Use low-cost distractors: Use Tombstone in the middle to pull units from both lanes, or drop Guards to stall high-damage melee troops.
- Trade towers when necessary: If the opponent spends six or more Elixir on the opposite lane, accept the tower damage. A fully supported Lava Hound push generates three-crown pressure faster than unsupported ground units can clear your King Tower.
Handling Inferno Defenses
Inferno Tower and Inferno Dragon deal ramping damage that quickly neutralizes the Lava Hound. Disarming them requires disciplined card sequencing:
- Counters to Inferno Dragon: Deploy Mega Minion or Skeleton Dragons into the lane so they target the Inferno Dragon while it focuses on the Lava Hound. Hold Zap and cast it only when the beam reaches its thickest damage stage to force a full damage reset.
- Counters to Inferno Tower: Position a Flying Machine at the river to snipe a center-planted Inferno Tower from outside its range. If using Skeleton Dragons, deploy them slightly ahead of the Lava Hound as it crosses the bridge to absorb the beam's lock-on.

The tips are practical and easy to follow.
I tried this today and it worked better than my old setup.
Can you add more details about strategy in a future update?
