Clash Royale Hunter Defense Guide: Positioning and Counters

To defend effectively with Hunter in Clash Royale, deploy him directly on top of incoming offensive targets so that all ten shotgun pellets connect in a single point-blank blast. Hunter's damage drops significantly at range because his pellets spread outward in a cone, but his close-range burst damage stops high-threat ground and air units before they can connect to your Princess Tower.

Point-Blank Placement for High-Threat Tanks

Hunter fires ten individual projectiles in an expanding cone. At long or medium range, these pellets disperse across multiple tiles, dealing minor chip damage. At melee range, every pellet hits a single target simultaneously.

Use these placement rules when defending key win conditions:

1. Hog Rider and Ram Rider: Drop Hunter one tile in front of your Princess Tower directly in the path of the approaching runner. Connecting with all ten pellets destroys the rider before it can hit the tower.
2. Balloon: Place Hunter directly under the shadow of the incoming Balloon. This positioning lands two full point-blank volleys, popping the Balloon before it reaches the tower and minimizing death bomb damage.
3. Heavy Ground Tanks (Giant, Goblin Giant, Mega Knight): Drop Hunter right beside the tank while deploying a cheap unit to pull supporting troops away. Hunter eliminates these targets in three to four point-blank volleys.
4. Lava Hound: Position Hunter near the Princess Tower to shred the main body. When the Hound pops, Hunter’s conical pellet spread eliminates multiple Lava Pups in a single blast.

Because Hunter targets both air and ground units with physical burst damage, his attack cannot be reset by Zap, Electro Wizard, or Lightning stun effects in the way an Inferno Dragon can.

Managing Hunter's 2.2-Second Hit Speed

Hunter’s primary weakness is his slow 2.2-second hit speed. If he is surrounded by swarm units, his single-direction cone blast only eliminates the troops directly in front of him, leaving him vulnerable to chip damage during his reload animation.

Adjust your positioning and spell usage based on the incoming push:

• Back up against swarms: When defending against Graveyard or incoming swarm units, place Hunter three to four tiles away rather than on top of them. The wider pellet spread cleans up groups more effectively than a tight melee shot.
• Clear air swarms first: If an enemy tank is escorted by Bats or Minions, cast a small spell like Zap, The Log, or Barbarian Barrel before deploying Hunter so his blast targets the primary tank.
• Avoid spell clumping: Do not drop Hunter directly touching your Princess Tower against heavy beatdown decks. Spacing him slightly away prevents opponents from clipping both Hunter and the tower with Fireball, Poison, or Lightning.

Defensive Synergy Pairings

At four elixir, Hunter needs cheap support cards to buy time between his shotgun blasts. Pairing him with low-cost cycle cards prevents melee attackers from hitting him while he reloads.

Converting Stops Into Counter-Pushes

Hunter moves slowly and is easily distracted by swarms when crossing into enemy territory alone, making solo offensive drops ineffective. Instead, convert a surviving defensive Hunter into a counter-push by providing a target for the enemy Princess Tower.

As Hunter approaches the river after defending, deploy a secondary threat such as Miner, Goblin Barrel, or Royal Hogs. Once the enemy Princess Tower locks onto your counter-push threat, Hunter walks in behind it. Enemy defenders like Valkyrie or Mini P.E.K.K.A must walk directly into melee range to stop your push, allowing Hunter to eliminate them with full point-blank volleys.
