To turn defense into a winning counter-push on the Clash Royale ladder, deploy durable defensive anchor units away from your towers to prevent spell damage, neutralize incoming threats, and attach support troops behind any surviving units. Keep at least 2 to 3 elixir in reserve during every transition to avoid leaving your own towers undefended.
Setting Up Defensive Anchors
Winning defensive trades requires deploying units that survive the opponent's attack with enough health to lead or support a forward push. Positioning and unit selection determine whether a defense ends with a wiped board or an active threat.
- Select Core Defensive Anchors: Choose troops capable of surviving light spells or heavy combat. Placing an Ice Wizard toward the back slows enemy waves, keeping the unit alive to lead the next lane push.
- Prevent Spell Value: Place defensive units away from your Princess towers. Spacing troops prevents opponents from damaging both your troops and your tower simultaneously with Fireball or Poison.
- Kite Heavy Hitters: Deploy low-cost units near the center of the arena to pull slow, high-damage melee troops into range of both Princess towers.
Executing the Counter-Push Transition
Once the opponent's attack is broken, transition immediately into offense based on the remaining health of your troops and your current elixir count.
- Wait for the Defensive Trade: Allow your towers and defensive anchors to finish off the enemy push before placing offensive support.
- Add Lane Support: Drop high-damage or tank units, such as a Giant, directly in front of or behind your surviving defensive anchors as they cross the river.
- Maintain Pressure on Damaged Towers: Target the lane where the opponent has already taken damage to force them to spend elixir defensively under pressure.
Managing Elixir Discipline and Card Cycles
Over-committing elixir to a counter-push exposes your towers to opposite-lane attacks or heavy pushes featuring units like PEKKA or Golem. Maintaining strict elixir control prevents sudden defensive collapses.
| Defense Action | Target Elixir Reserve | Next Decision Step |
|---|---|---|
| Successful Defense (Anchors Alive) | 2–3 Elixir | Place support behind surviving troops if opponent is low on elixir. |
| Defensive Anchor Stalled by Building | 3+ Elixir | Stop committing units; allow the push to die out and reset your card cycle. |
| Opponent Holding Primary Counter | 2–3 Elixir | Play a secondary troop to bait out their hard counter before dropping your main tank. |
If an opponent repeatedly blocks your main push with a specific card or defensive building, refrain from feeding extra elixir into that lane. Let the surviving troops deal whatever damage they can, preserve your remaining elixir, and return to your defensive rotation to setup the next trade.

This saved me time in the early game.
Good guide for Clash Royale players. The strategy part was useful.
I tried this today and it worked better than my old setup.
Can you add more details about strategy in a future update?
