To counter Three Musketeers in Clash Royale, deploy cards that exploit their nine-Elixir cost through positive trades, center pulls, and heavy area damage. Each individual Musketeer shares the identical hitpoints and damage of the standard four-Elixir Musketeer. Because the opponent spends almost their entire Elixir bar to deploy them, any defense that costs seven or fewer Elixir secures a resource advantage.
Low-Cost Distractions (1 to 2 Elixir)
Defending with one-Elixir and two-Elixir cards requires pulling the Musketeers toward the center of your territory so both Princess Towers can target them.
- Skeletons (1 Elixir): Plant Skeletons dead center, four tiles up from your King Tower, to draw the Musketeers' firing lines inward.
- Ice Spirit or Electro Spirit (1 Elixir): Place a spirit to freeze or stun the trio for over a second, delaying their damage while towers chip them down.
- The Log (2 Elixir): Roll The Log into the trio to knock them back, reset their attack windup, and shave off hitpoints.
- Barbarian Barrel (2 Elixir): Roll the barrel over the trio to deal entry damage, then let the emerging Barbarian distract them in melee range.
- Ice Golem (2 Elixir): Deploy the Ice Golem in the opposite lane to kite the Musketeers across the arena. The death frost slow grants Princess Towers additional time to finish them off.
- Goblins (2 Elixir): Use Goblins as a center distraction or drop them directly on top of distracted Musketeers to quickly burn their health.
Mid-Cost Direct Trades (3 to 4 Elixir)
Three-Elixir and four-Elixir cards offer safe, standalone answers that neutralize Three Musketeers without requiring complex dual-tower setups.
3-Elixir Options
- Skeleton Army: Drop Skeleton Army directly on top of unsplit Musketeers to eliminate them in under two seconds, provided the opponent does not have a prediction spell ready.
- Royal Delivery: Drop Royal Delivery on the trio. The falling crate deals heavy splash damage, and the spawned Recruit immediately engages the survivors in close combat.
- Firecracker: Place Firecracker out of the Musketeers' range. Her explosive piercing rounds hit the full cluster, and her knockback recoil keeps her safely out of retaliatory fire.
4-Elixir Options
- Fireball: An equal-level Fireball reduces all three Musketeers to a sliver of health, allowing Princess Towers, Zap, or The Log to finish them off for a massive trade.
- Valkyrie: Drop Valkyrie in the center of the trio. Her 360-degree axe swing hits all three targets at once while her hitpoint pool absorbs their incoming volleys.
- Dark Prince: Deploy Dark Prince to absorb the Musketeers' initial burst with his shield, followed by his charging area-damage swing to wipe them out.
Heavy Troop and Spell Counters (5 to 7 Elixir)
When the opponent groups all three Musketeers into a single lane, heavy ground splashers and high-damage spells completely shut down the push and often create a counter-push.
| Defensive Card | Elixir Cost | Interaction Strategy | Resulting Advantage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Barbarians | 5 Elixir | Surround the trio at the bridge | +4 Elixir trade; healthy surviving units |
| Bowler | 5 Elixir | Roll boulders in a straight line from behind the tower | +4 Elixir trade; continuous knockback |
| Rocket | 6 Elixir | Aim directly at clustered Musketeers | +3 Elixir trade; instant elimination |
| Lightning | 6 Elixir | Target the trio using highest-HP priority | +3 Elixir trade; eliminates all three |
| Elite Barbarians | 6 Elixir | Run them directly into the trio with high single-target DPS | +3 Elixir trade; surviving counter-threat |
| Mega Knight | 7 Elixir | Drop directly onto the cluster for enter-the-arena impact | +2 Elixir trade; full Mega Knight push |
Defending Against Split Musketeers
Experienced opponents often split Three Musketeers behind their King Tower, sending two down one lane and one down the other.
- Prioritize the two-Musketeer lane: Treat the paired side as the primary threat. Commit a mid-cost answer—such as Fireball, Valkyrie, or Royal Delivery—to neutralize both Musketeers simultaneously.
- Defend the solo Musketeer cheaply: Use one-Elixir Skeletons, Goblins, or an Ice Spirit pulled toward the middle of the board to eliminate the lone Musketeer with tower support.
- Save small spells for bridge tanks: Opponents frequently place an Ice Golem or Battle Ram in front of split Musketeers at the bridge. Keep cheap spells or swarms available to intercept these secondary tanks before they absorb your tower fire.

This helped me understand strategy much better.
I wish I had read this before upgrading the wrong thing.
I tried this today and it worked better than my old setup.
Good guide for Clash Royale players. The strategy part was useful.
