To survive the Hazardous Iron challenge mode in Dome Keeper, you must eliminate self-inflicted mining damage. In this modifier, iron nodes and loose resource chunks damage your keeper upon impact and manual transport. Because iron is required for core upgrades and repairs, you cannot skip mining it. Survival depends on isolating deposits before breaking them, prioritizing drill and carry upgrades early, using gadgets to bypass manual hauling, and returning to the dome well before hostile waves arrive.

Safe Mining and Shaft Layouts

Vertical strip mining is lethal in Hazardous Iron because dislodged iron falls directly onto your keeper. Dig horizontal offset shafts instead so gravity pulls broken ore away from your character into open collection pockets.

Apply these extraction rules to reduce impact damage:

  • Clear adjacent rock first: Dig out the standard stone bordering an iron vein before striking the ore itself. Isolating the node creates clear movement space and prevents accidental contact while maneuvering.
  • Break one chunk at a time: Do not strike multiple iron tiles rapidly. Breaking clusters at once produces bouncing debris that inflicts repeated collision damage.
  • Carve lower drop shelves: Dig out staging shelves directly below mineral veins. Allow dislodged chunks to settle on the floor before stepping in to move them.
  • Upgrade drill power early: Improving drill strength cuts the number of hits required to break a tile, reducing the time your keeper spends in contact with volatile blocks.

Early Upgrade Priority

Every trip to the surface carries physical risk. Spend early iron on upgrades that minimize round trips and improve tool efficiency rather than speculative utility.

Priority StageFocus AreaStrategic Purpose
Early Tier 1Drill Power 1 & Carry StrengthCuts strikes per node and moves more ore per haul to minimize transit trips.
Early Tier 2Hostile Detection & ShieldGives early wave warnings to prevent rushed ascents and absorbs chip damage.
Mid Tier 1Primary Weapon Damage & TrackingEliminates attacking waves quickly to maximize mining time between cycles.
Mid Tier 2Dome Health Buffer & RepairsRestores structural integrity lost to accidental iron contact.

Investing in carry capacity alongside early drill strength reduces the total number of ascents required. Moving a single stabilized load of ore causes far fewer accidental wall collisions than rushing back and forth across multiple partial hauls.

Gadget Selection and Transport

Manual hauling carries high collision risks in narrow mine shafts. Recovering transport gadgets from relic chambers drastically lowers keeper exposure to hazardous ore.

  • The Lift: The ideal utility for Hazardous Iron. Place the lift shaft along your main vertical corridor, sweep loose iron into the beam, and let the mechanical transport deliver it to the dome hopper without physical contact.
  • The Teleporter: If you do not find the Lift, set up a Teleporter near deep resource deposits. Using a teleport gate bypasses narrow transit choke points where bumping into hauled iron drains health.
  • Drillbert and Blast Mining: Use automated mining tools with caution. Explosions and uncontrolled automated drilling can fling hazardous fragments across open chambers, creating dangerous debris in high-traffic corridors. Confine explosive mining to sealed pockets with collection trenches.

Wave Defense and Combat Timing

Hostile waves in Hazardous Iron are dangerous because your dome rarely enters combat at maximum health. Accumulated mining damage softens your defenses, making weapon management critical.

  1. Evacuate early: Do not mine additional tiles once the wave warning starts. Stop work at the midpoint of the alert cycle, stabilize any loose iron, and reach the weapon station before monsters spawn. Rushing to the dome increases clumsy collisions with hauled ore.
  2. Prioritize aerial attackers: Target fast flyers and dive-bombers first. Eliminating rapid aerial threats protects shield capacitors and prevents fast hull damage.
  3. Focus armored ground units: Maintain continuous fire on heavy burrowers and siege units before they reach the dome base.
  4. Repair before drilling deeper: If combat leaves the hull compromised, spend your remaining iron on structural repairs before purchasing deep-layer drill upgrades. Maintaining a safe health buffer ensures your dome can absorb occasional mining mishaps.
