To survive the Projectile Hell challenge mode in Dome Keeper, you must clear airborne artillery before engaging melee targets and return to your defensive seat immediately when the wave warning blinks. The modifier fills waves with long-range spitters and floating mortars that damage the dome from afar, making slow underground mining runs and sluggish weapon tracking fatal.

Upgrade Progression and Investment Order

Prioritize movement and drilling in the opening cycles to secure early iron, then transition directly into primary weapon handling to keep up with split-flank bombardments.

PriorityUpgrade CategoryPrimary FunctionTarget Window
1Drill & Carry SpeedClear soft upper rock layers and haul iron without stallingWaves 1–3
2Primary Weapon TrackingRotate rapidly between opposing airborne targetsWaves 3–5
3Dome Durability / ShieldAbsorb inevitable chip damage from stray projectile volleysWaves 5–8
4Weapon Power / OverchargeEliminate high-health long-range artillery in fewer hitsWaves 8+

Weapon tracking speed is critical by Wave 3. Without faster rotation speed, your weapon cannot traverse across the dome quickly enough to intercept projectiles launched simultaneously from opposite sides of the map.

Defensive Targeting Priority

When a wave begins, park your targeting reticle slightly above the center of the dome. Resting your crosshair in the center minimizes the travel distance needed to reach either sky flank. Engage hostiles using this sequence:

  1. Floating Mortar Artillery: Destroy heavy mortar units first. Their slow, explosive spheres deal the highest structural damage to the dome.
  2. Mid-Flight Projectiles: Sweep your firing arc through incoming ordnance and high-speed needles to detonate them before they impact the hull.
  3. Winged Spitters: Take out fast-moving multi-shot flyers before they complete repeated attack passes.
  4. Ground Melee Crawlers: Leave crawling ground units for last. Because ground enemies must walk to your perimeter before dealing damage, they pose no immediate threat during the opening seconds of a barrage.

Mining Routes and Wave Timing

Deep exploratory shafts leave your dome undefended against instant projectile strikes. Adjust your digging strategy around strict, shallow intervals:

  • Dig horizontally near the surface: Mine directly below the dome and branch horizontally through soft top strata. Avoid descending into harder rock layers until your drill strength matches their density.
  • Haul resources in small batches: Bring iron to the surface in small clusters immediately rather than stacking large stockpiles at the bottom of a shaft.
  • Heed the battle radar: Drop your cargo and head straight to the control seat the instant the wave indicator starts blinking. Returning after hostiles appear allows incoming artillery to strike the dome uncontested.

Gadgets and Cobalt Preservation

Active defense gadgets mitigate the chip damage that inevitable stray projectiles cause:

  • Shield Dome: Invest cobalt into base shield capacity before buying structural dome repairs. Preventing damage preserves your hull and reduces long-term maintenance costs.
  • Stun Laser: Target heavy spitters with the stun laser to interrupt their firing animations and reset their attack loops.
  • Cobalt Economy: Do not spend cobalt to repair minor hull scratches. Reserve your cobalt for significant damage thresholds to avoid running out of resources needed for late-wave tech upgrades.
