To upgrade and build effective heroes in Epic Age, invest free attribute points into each commander's primary scaling stat, march them exclusively with S-rank or A-rank troop formations, and awaken them at Level 20 to unlock their third skill slot.
Attribute Allocation and Speed Tuning
Heroes gain 10 unassigned attribute points every 10 levels, along with bonus points earned whenever you ascend their star rating using duplicate cards. Spend these points focused on a single stat rather than spreading them across multiple attributes:
- Strength: Increases physical damage output. Invest all points here for physical damage dealers.
- Intelligence: Increases tactical damage output and reduces incoming tactical damage. Invest all points here for tactical spellcasters.
- Defense: Reduces incoming physical damage.
- Speed: Increases world map march speed and determines combat turn order. Add just enough Speed to debuffers and crowd-control support heroes so they act immediately before your primary damage dealer.
- Siege: Increases demolition damage against cities, neutral objectives, and player fortifications. Keep combat commanders out of dedicated siege stat builds.
Troop Aptitude Multipliers
Every hero has an aptitude rating ranging from S to C across four military types: Infantry, Cavalry, Archers, and Pikemen. These grades apply direct percentage modifiers to the commander's base attributes in battle.
| Aptitude Grade | Attribute Multiplier | Combat Performance Impact |
|---|---|---|
| S-Rank | 120% | Grants a 20% bonus to base attributes; ideal for primary squads. |
| A-Rank | 100% | Neutral baseline with no attribute penalties or bonuses. |
| B-Rank | 85% | Imposes a 15% reduction to Strength, Intelligence, and Defense. |
| C-Rank | 70% | Imposes a 30% reduction to Strength, Intelligence, and Defense. |
Never deploy a hero with B-rank or C-rank troops. A high-rarity commander in a B-rank or C-rank squad loses up to 30% of their base combat stats, performing worse than lower-rarity heroes marching with S-rank compatibility. Ensure all three commanders in a squad hold an S or A aptitude for your chosen troop type.
Unlocking Skill Slots and Awakening
Each hero possesses three potential skill slots. Unlocking and leveling these slots dictates overall squad combat power:
- Slot 1 (Inherent Skill): Available immediately at recruit. Upgrade this skill from Rank 1 to Rank 10 using skill points.
- Slot 2 (Secondary Skill): Unlocks automatically when the hero reaches Level 5. Equip any compatible skill researched from your card collection.
- Slot 3 (Awakening / Breakthrough): Unlocks only after meeting two strict progression milestones:
- Raise the hero to Level 20.
- Upgrade their inherent primary skill to Rank 10.
Once both requirements are met, consume duplicate hero cards of matching rarity (such as two 5-star cards for a Legendary hero or two 4-star cards for an Epic hero) to complete the Awakening. Focus scarce duplicate cards on your main damage dealer's awakening before unlocking third slots on secondary support heroes.
Managing Skill Points and Card Conversion
Upgrading skills to Rank 10 requires large amounts of skill points obtained by deconstructing surplus heroes:
- Decompose Low-Tier Cards: Convert 2-star (green) and 3-star (blue) cards regularly through the hero menu to sustain a steady skill point flow.
- Choose the Right Conversion Currency: Deconstructing with Copper grants standard skill point returns. Deconstructing with Gold doubles the points received, which is best reserved for season start races.
- Lock Key 4-Star and 5-Star Cards: Always lock useful 4-star heroes and all 5-star heroes immediately. Surplus 4-star cards are required as fuel to awaken Epic heroes and research advanced inherited skills.
Resetting Attributes and Skills
If you need to change squad turn orders or retire an outdated commander, use the in-game reset options:
- Attribute Reset: Reallocates all milestone and star-ascension stat points back to zero without penalty, allowing you to retune Speed thresholds or damage types.
- Hero Reset: Refunds a high percentage of invested skill points and unbinds secondary skills back to your inventory so you can equip them on new squad leaders. Perform resets while heroes are resting in camp to prevent deploying incomplete builds into combat.

This saved me time in the early game.
Good guide for Epic Age players. The heroes part was useful.
Can you add more details about heroes in a future update?
This helped me understand heroes much better.
