To inherit and equip new skills in Epic Age, dismantle duplicate hero cards to obtain their skill blueprints, feed lower-tier cards into research until it reaches 100 percent, and assign completed abilities that match your commander's dominant attributes. Never dismantle your only copy of a 5-star hero; extract skills only from expendable duplicates or niche units that your active squad can utilize immediately.
How to Unlock and Research Inherited Skills
Every hero card in Epic Age contains a unique inheritable skill that can be extracted through the hero management menu. Dismantling a hero destroys the card permanently to produce that skill's research blueprint.
Once a blueprint is created, you cannot equip the skill until research is complete:
- Extract the Blueprint: Navigate to the hero card in your roster and select the dismantle option to generate the skill blueprint. Lock your essential and single-copy 5-star heroes beforehand to avoid accidental destruction.
- Commit Research Fodder: Open the skill interface and feed duplicate 3-star or 4-star cards into the progress bar. Higher-tier skills require multiple sacrifices before reaching completion.
- Equip to an Open Slot: Once research reaches 100 percent, assign the ability to an open skill slot on a compatible hero.
If you lack surplus fodder cards to complete research immediately, hold off on dismantling. Disassembling too early deprives your roster of a usable hero while leaving you with an unusable blueprint. Stockpile lower-tier cards from recruitment before starting the process.
Skill Categories and Combat Timing
Equippable skills operate across four distinct trigger timings. Selecting the right category ensures abilities trigger reliably according to your hero's squad role:
| Skill Category | Trigger Timing | In-Battle Function | Recommended Role |
|---|---|---|---|
| Command | Preparation Phase | Applies pre-battle auras, buffs, or damage reduction | Support heroes and defensive anchors |
| Passive | Battle Start | Grants persistent stat boosts or conditional reactions | Primary carries and front-line tanks |
| Active | Combat Action Turn | Percentage-based rolls for burst damage or crowd control | High-Speed primary and secondary attackers |
| Pursuit | Post-Normal Attack | Triggers extra physical strikes after standard attacks | High-Might commanders with multi-strike setups |
Command and Passive skills execute automatically without roll-to-trigger RNG, making them immune to Silence and ideal for stabilizing incoming damage. Active skills offer high burst damage but risk failing percentage checks or suffering disruption from control effects. Pursuit skills trigger solely after landing normal attacks, functioning best on fast, physical attackers.
Matching Skills to Hero Scaling and Squad Roles
Inherited skills lose effectiveness if their damage type does not match a commander's primary attribute growth:
- Attribute Scaling: Might governs physical attack abilities and Pursuit triggers. Intelligence scales tactical ability damage, magic defense, healing amounts, and damage barriers. Equipping an Intelligence-based tactical skill on a Might-focused physical attacker wastes both the slot and the hero's stat profile.
- Troop Aptitudes: Field heroes in formations matching their S-rank troop aptitude (Cavalry, Spearmen, Archers, or Siege). S-rank units receive full attribute scaling, whereas fielding lower aptitudes reduces combat stats and diminishes skill output.
- Turn Order and Status Effects: Speed determines turn priority. Place utility debuffs and crowd control (such as Stun or Disarm) on your fastest hero so enemy defenses drop before your main carry acts. Avoid equipping identical damage-over-time skills across multiple heroes, as identical instances of Burn, Poison, or Bleed overwrite each other rather than stacking.
Skill Leveling and Awakening Priorities
Skill upgrades require Skill Points, which are generated by converting surplus 2-star and 3-star cards acquired from common recruitment. Because points are scarce during early progression, distribute them deliberately:
- Max the Primary Carry First: Prioritize leveling the innate ability (Slot 1) and first inherited offensive skill (Slot 2) on your primary damage dealer to accelerate territory expansion and reduce troop losses.
- Support Skills Can Wait: Defensive barriers, healing, and control abilities function acceptably at moderate levels early on; leave them partially upgraded until your main carry reaches maximum skill ranks.
- Awakening at Level 20: Reaching level 20 allows you to awaken a hero and unlock their third skill slot. Do not invest awakening materials until you have a fully researched, high-synergy skill ready to place into Slot 3 immediately.
