To hunt ships successfully with drone boats in EVE Echoes, pin your target with tackle modules before deploying your drone wing, hold an active orbit between 10 km and 15 km, and manage drone aggro to avoid being defanged. Drone platforms project sustained damage without consuming capacitor, but securing kills requires strict engagement timing, capacitor warfare, and prompt disengagement when encountering bait.

Outfitting Drone Hulls for Roaming PvP

Hunting hulls—such as the Vexor Navy Issue, Prophecy, Dominix, or specialized carriers—require fittings focused on aggression, capacitor drain, and close-range control rather than PvE sustain.

  • Mid Slots (Hard Tackle and Tracking): Fit a Warp Disruptor or Warp Scrambler to disable hostile Micro Warp Drives (MWDs) and stop warp alignment. Add a Stasis Webifier to reduce enemy flight speed, which keeps targets inside drone range. Use a Target Painter or Sensor Booster to speed up target locks against small hulls and bloom their signature radius for heavy drones.
  • High Slots (Capacitor Warfare): Fit Energy Neutralizers and Nosferatu modules. Draining a hostile capacitor shuts down active shield boosters, armor repairers, and propulsion modules.
  • Low Slots (Mobility and Buffer): Combine an Afterburner or MWD with adaptive or reactive armor hardeners to survive incoming alpha damage while establishing your orbit.

Engagement Sequence: Landing and Holding Tackle

When dropping on targets at cosmic anomalies, asteroid belts, or gates, apply tackle within the first two lock cycles before the target initiates warp.

  1. Approach the Target: Overheat your propulsion module immediately upon landing on grid to close distance.
  2. Lock and Point: Establish target lock and immediately activate your Warp Scrambler to shut off hostile MWDs.
  3. Web the Target: Activate your Stasis Webifier to prevent the target from burning away from your scrambler envelope.
  4. Deploy Drones: Launch your drones only after tackle is active. Launching drones before locking alerts ratters via their overview.
  5. Establish Orbit: Orbit the target at 10 km to 15 km using an Afterburner. This orbital speed disrupts the tracking of heavy blaster and laser platforms while keeping your modules in range.

Against frigates and light cruisers, deploy light or medium drones first to strip shields quickly. Shift to heavy or sentry drones only when tackling slow battlecruisers or industrial hulls that cannot outrun heavy drone tracking.

Managing Drone Wing Health Under Fire

If your drone wing is destroyed, your ship loses its primary offensive capability. Counter incoming threats by monitoring drone status bars on your interface:

Combat SituationRisk to DronesImmediate Action
Smartbomb activationArea-of-effect damage destroys the wingRecall drones to the bay; cycle Energy Neutralizers to drain the hostile ship's capacitor.
Target kiting awayDrones fall behind; DPS drops to zeroRe-apply your Stasis Webifier; recall and relaunch drones closer to the target.
Electronic Countermeasures (ECM)Target lock is broken; drones sit idleSet drones to aggressive mode; burn closer to re-establish manual point.
Hostile fleet lands on gridPrimary ship is targeted and overwhelmedScoop drones immediately; align to an off-grid celestial and activate warp.

When a target targets an individual heavy drone, recall that specific unit into your drone bay and immediately redeploy it. Cycling the damaged drone resets hostile targeting priorities and keeps your damage output stable.

Escaping Bait and Response Fleets

A target that makes no attempt to warp away, refuses to align, or approaches your ship when tackled is usually bait holding you on grid for reinforcements. If local chat numbers spike or hostiles appear on directional scan, evaluate your exit:

  1. Identify Incoming Tackle: Check whether you are caught by a long-range Warp Disruptor or a close-range Warp Scrambler.
  2. Neutralize Fast Tacklers: Direct all Energy Neutralizers and light drones at the fastest frigate or interceptor pinning your ship to break their tackle range.
  3. Overheat Propulsion: Overheat your propulsion module and align to an off-grid celestial rather than an obvious gate camp.
  4. Cut Losses on Drones: If heavy tackle or hostile capital hulls land, hit warp immediately rather than waiting to scoop your drones.

Aggression Timers and Safe Extraction

Destroying a target or activating offensive modules on capsuleers starts a combat aggression timer, preventing you from docking or jumping through stargates.

Once the target is destroyed, scoop the wreck quickly without staying stationary. Create a temporary bookmark midway through an interplanetary warp to generate a deep-space safe spot. Warp to this safe bookmark, deploy fresh drones, run repairers, and wait out your combat timer before charting a path through gates.
