To activate passive city buffs from Evony Duty Generals, open a building's internal menu, navigate to its Duty tab, and station a general who meets the building's Level, Star Level, and Cultivation thresholds.
Because a general cannot march in combat and hold a building duty at the same time, reserve your primary PvP and rally officers for marches while assigning secondary officers to your infrastructure.
How Building Duty Mechanics Work
Duty Generals act as static administrators within your city. When properly qualified and assigned, they provide permanent percentage-based bonuses across your entire empire.
To unlock a building's duty bonuses, the assigned general must satisfy three core conditions:
- General Level: The officer must reach the baseline level required by that specific building tier.
- Star Level: You must enhance the general to meet minimum star requirements.
- Cultivation Stats: You must spend Gold and Runestones in the general's Cultivation tab to reach the required stat thresholds for leadership, politics, attack, or defense.
If a general fails to meet any of these requirements, the duty slot remains inactive, and no passive bonuses will apply.
Priority Buildings and Target Buffs
Focus your initial investments on high-impact military and infrastructure buildings. Match officers whose inherent skills directly complement the building's primary bonus:
| Building | Key Duty Priority | Primary Benefit |
|---|---|---|
| Barracks | Training Speed | Reduces production time for ground troops |
| Hospital | Hospital Capacity | Saves troops from permanent death during SvS and PvP combat |
| Keep | Construction Speed | Accelerates upgrade timelines for high-level infrastructure |
| Warehouse | Warehouse Capacity | Increases protected resource limits against enemy raids |
| Stables & Workshop | Unit Training Speed | Decreases production time for mounted and siege units |
Assigning Officers vs. Combat Marches
A general stationed on duty is unavailable for rally leads, gather marches, or PvP attacks. Managing this trade-off requires dividing your roster into clear roles:
- Primary Combat Generals: Save your strongest officers with high march capacity and offensive skills exclusively for combat and rallies.
- Secondary Officers: Invest Gold and Runestones into specialized secondary generals who possess passive duty skills, assigning them to your city buildings permanently.
- Specialist Priority: Prefer generals with specific skill descriptions tailored to a duty slot (such as direct Training Speed or Hospital Capacity boosts) over high-tier combat generals who lack relevant building perks.
Roster Auditing and Maintenance
As your Keep advances and new generals are added to Evony, regularly audit your assignments to maximize city throughput:
- Check Building Duty Tabs: Open each building periodically to inspect updated candidate lists and revised threshold requirements.
- Reallocate Cultivation Resources: If a newly acquired general features stronger duty perks, invest your Gold and Runestones into their Cultivation stats to replace older officers.
- Prepare for Milestone Upgrades: Before starting major Keep or infrastructure upgrades, confirm your Keep Duty General is fully active to maximize construction speed discounts.

I wish I had read this before upgrading the wrong thing.
Good guide for Evony players. The base building part was useful.
The explanation is clear, especially for beginners.
I tried this today and it worked better than my old setup.
