You can customize your cities by choosing one of seven civilizations—American, Chinese, European, Russian, Korean, Arabia, or Japanese—so your empire’s architectural style reflects the direction you want to take. Generals add another important collection and planning element: historical figures such as Abraham Lincoln, George Washington, King Arthur, Julius Caesar, Genghis Khan, Oda Nobunaga, and Yi Sun-sin can be recruited to support battles and city development. The extra screen space is valuable when you need to keep city development, army preparation, and map activity in view rather than treating each decision in isolation.

Alliance play gives the empire-building systems a social and strategic purpose. You can join an Alliance, communicate through real-time voice and text chat, and use auto-translations to coordinate with players who speak different languages. That communication is designed for improving strategies and winning larger battles, so the social layer is not separate from the military game: cooperation can shape how you respond to enemies and how you plan an epic campaign.
