PvP combat in Evony is resolved through an automated, server-side simulation divided into sequential combat rounds rather than real-time movement. Winning engagements requires understanding how unit speed, attack range, and targeting hierarchies interact across each turn. By deploying layered marches, you can redirect hostile targeting to low-tier squads and keep your high-tier damage dealers alive across multiple combat rounds.

The Combat Round Sequence

When an attacking march strikes an enemy city or tile, the combat engine executes the encounter round by round up to a set turn limit. If neither army is eliminated when reaching the turn cap, the battle concludes, and the defender typically retains survival priority during casualty calculation.

Each combat round resolves in four distinct steps:

  1. Movement Phase: Units advance toward opposing lines according to their base movement speed until an enemy squad enters their attack range.
  2. Target Acquisition: Squads scan the field to identify valid targets based on their class-specific priority rules and current range.
  3. Damage Calculation: Units with targets in range attack. Outgoing attack buffs are calculated against the target squad's defense, HP, and active debuffs.
  4. Casualty Phase: Destroyed troops are removed from the squad immediately, reducing that squad's damage output for subsequent rounds.

Troop Range, Speed, and Battlefield Roles

Range dictates when a squad can start attacking, while movement speed determines how many rounds melee units must spend closing the distance. High-range units attack from the opening turn, whereas melee units must survive multiple movement phases before dealing damage.

Troop TypeBase RangeMovement SpeedPrimary Combat Role
Siege EnginesExtreme (up to 1400+)Extremely SlowAttacks immediately from Round 1; targets enemy siege and ranged
Ranged TroopsModerate (~500)ModerateFires on approaching units before melee contact; targets mounted
Mounted TroopsShort / Melee (50)Extremely FastCrosses the field quickly to strike backline ranged and siege units
Ground TroopsShort / Melee (50)Slow to ModerateAdvances methodically to absorb enemy fire and intercept melee

Because mounted troops move the fastest, they cross the field before ground units. However, if an opponent fields sufficient ranged firepower, unprotected cavalry can be destroyed before making melee contact. High-tier siege engines begin dealing damage in Round 1, making counter-siege capabilities critical for neutralizing artillery before it hits mid-range squads.

Targeting Hierarchies by Unit Class

Squads prioritize opposing unit types in a fixed order once valid targets enter attack range:

  • Ranged Units: Target mounted troops first because cavalry advance rapidly into firing range. Once enemy mounted units are eliminated, ranged squads shift their fire to ground troops, followed by opposing ranged units, and finally siege engines.
  • Mounted Units: Prioritize enemy backline damage dealers, specifically ranged and siege units. If intercepted or forced into melee by dense frontlines, mounted units engage opposing ground troops.
  • Ground Units: Prioritize opposing ranged formations and enemy ground lines. With high base Defense and HP, their primary role is absorbing enemy archer fire while advancing to tie up hostile melee units.
  • Siege Engines: Operate on range brackets. Extreme-range siege squads target opposing siege units of equal or lower range first. If all enemy siege engines are eliminated, they redirect their attacks into opposing ranged and ground formations.

How Troop Layering Protects Damage Stacks

Layering is the strategy of including a small squad of every troop tier (from Tier 1 up to your maximum tier) across all four troop types alongside your main damage stack.

In any combat round, an attacking enemy squad directs its entire damage output into a single targeted squad. If an incoming strike deals 50 million damage to a sacrifice layer of 1,000 Tier 4 Ground troops, the full damage is consumed eliminating that single squad. The excess overkill damage does not spill over to adjacent tiers in the same turn.

Adding layers across all troop tiers forces the opposing army to waste multiple combat rounds clearing low-tier targets. This delay prevents your primary high-tier squads from taking damage early, giving them uncontested rounds to eliminate the enemy army.

Combat Debuffs and Survival Stats

Stat reduction limits and defensive scaling affect how much damage squads sustain during combat:

  • The Debuff Cap: Debuffs applied through gear and Subordinate Cities cannot reduce an opponent's stats below their base values. In most combat calculations, total debuffs cannot strip away more than 50% of an enemy's combined buff pool.
  • HP versus Defense: Defense reduces flat incoming damage per strike. However, when incoming attack multipliers scale into thousands of percentage points, HP becomes the decisive stat for keeping squads alive to attack in subsequent rounds.

Next Steps for Analyzing Combat Reports

When reviewing failed PvP attacks or defenses, inspect the battle report for round-by-round failure points rather than focusing solely on overall troop losses:

  1. Check whether fast-moving mounted troops charged ahead without sufficient protection and died before reaching enemy ranged lines.
  2. Confirm whether low-tier siege layers were depleted early, allowing hostile siege engines to target your primary damage tiers from Round 1.
  3. Review enemy debuffs to verify whether your Subordinate Cities softened the opponent's primary damage-dealing tier.
