A Keep 33 player cannot out-buff a Keep 40 attacker with 2000% stats, but you can defeat them by cutting their offensive stats in half with debuffs, absorbing the hit with flat-refined Tier 1 troops, and ghosting your high-tier units to deny them points.
Instead of matching percentage stats, this defensive trap strategy relies on Evony's combat mechanics: debuff caps, flat equipment refines, and cheap troop layering.
The Debuff Floor and Buff Calculation
In Evony, debuffs are capped at 50% of the attacker's total buff value. When a K40 attacks with 2000% attack, defense, and HP buffs on T14 or T15 troops, a fully developed debuff setup can strip up to 1000% off those stats.
Attempting to counter a K40 using standard percentage refines will fail at K33 because your baseline research, building levels, and troop stats scale too slowly. Once subordinate city debuffs slash the incoming march down to its 50% statutory floor, a massive wall of low-tier units bolstered by flat numerical attributes can withstand the attack and trade positively in Server vs. Server (SvS) or Battlefield events.
Wall General Flat Refine Setup
Flat-stat refines add a fixed numerical value directly to every soldier rather than multiplying base attributes. While a percentage refine yields almost no benefit on low-tier units due to their low baseline stats, a flat refine providing +1,500 defense applies its full bonus to every Tier 1 unit on the wall.
Because Tier 1 mounted troops serve as the primary frontline damage sponge against high-tier charges, prioritize flat mounted attributes on your main wall general's equipment:
| Equipment Slot | Priority Refine Stat | Defensive Function |
|---|---|---|
| Weapon | Flat Mounted Attack / Flat Siege Attack | Powers low-tier counterattacks during incoming charges |
| Armor / Helmet | Flat Mounted Defense / Flat Ground Defense | Prevents early meatshield collapse against ranged and ground rallies |
| Boots / Leg Armor | Flat Mounted HP | Expands the total health pool of the T1 mounted frontline |
| Ring | Flat Mounted Attack or Flat Mounted Defense | Provides sustained counter-damage and bulk across multiple hits |
Focus all available refine slots on raising flat Mounted HP and Defense. Elevating base T1 health into the thousands transforms hundreds of millions of low-cost troops into an immovable wall.
Subordinate City Debuff Optimization
Subordinate cities must function strictly as debuff stations to drag the attacker's march down to the 50% threshold. Equip every subordinate city mayor with dedicated debuff gear, using full Achaemenidae sets or Dragon and Achaemenidae hybrid pieces.
Structure mayor equipment to eliminate the attacker's primary offensive options:
- Ranged Attack Debuffs: Mitigate incoming ranged marches, which attackers commonly use to clear defensive traps from distance.
- Mounted Attack Debuffs: Neutralize heavy cavalry charges intended to break through ground or low-tier walls.
- Enemy Defense and HP Debuffs: Weaken the durability of incoming T13, T14, and T15 units, allowing your counterattacks to eliminate expensive troops.
Link all available subordinate cities to your main keep and verify that their automatic defense participation is active before taking an attack.
Troop Layering and Managing Point Leaks
High-tier troops inside a defensive trap castle cause catastrophic point losses if they are caught unghosted. When a 2000% buff march hits your city, any unghosted T11, T12, or T13 units will take heavy casualties, granting the attacker millions of battle points even if your defense technically holds.
Structure your roster around these guidelines:
- Primary Meatshield: Train a massive core of Tier 1 mounted troops, backed by secondary layers of Tier 1 ground and Tier 1 ranged units.
- Token Buff Layers: Keep thin layers of 1,000 to 2,000 troops per tier for all other levels. These token layers trigger combat skill sequences and target phases without conceding significant points upon death.
- Ghost Surplus Marchers: Hide any excess high-tier offensive troops in 60-minute alliance rallies or distant resource tiles before dropping your bubble.
Defensive Execution Sequence
When baiting a solo hit from an aggressive high-level player:
- Verify City Settings: Ensure all subordinate cities are linked with their mayors equipped, and check automatic city defense on your wall.
- Ghost High Tiers: Send all high-tier marchers into ghost rallies so only your T1 core and thin token layers remain home.
- Drop Bubble: Present a total keep power that looks vulnerable to a solo march, concealing the dense low-tier troop counts underneath.
- Take the Hit: Allow the enemy solo march to land. Your debuffs reduce the incoming march by half, your flat-boosted T1 mounted troops absorb the blow, and your counterattack destroys high-tier enemy units for a positive point exchange.

I wish I had read this before upgrading the wrong thing.
Can you add more details about strategy in a future update?
Good guide for Evony players. The strategy part was useful.
This saved me time in the early game.
