Do not spend Premium General Tokens in Evony incrementally across rotating banners. Unless you are recruiting an officer solely to serve as an assistant general, save your tokens until you can guarantee roughly 15 to 16 total copies (or their fragment equivalent) during a single event rotation to fully ascend that general to 5 red stars.

Pulling on a whim for a single copy of a primary march or wall general wastes resources. Once an event banner rotates out, unascended generals are locked out of further progress, leaving you with an underpowered officer that cannot compete with fully ascended tavern generals.

Copy Requirements for General Ascension

Ascension expands a general's power beyond the standard five gold stars, adding up to five red stars. Each red star unlocks percentage-based stat increases, higher march capacity, and advanced specialty attributes. However, ascending requires massive quantities of identical fragments, Blood of Ares, and gold.

Progression StageStar LevelCopies NeededBattlefield Role and Value
Base Unlock5 Gold Stars1 copyUsable as a march assistant; unviable as a primary march or defense leader.
Initial Ascension1–2 Red Stars2–4 additional copiesMinor stat and march size gains; still lags behind developed free-to-play options.
Mid Ascension3–4 Red Stars5–9 additional copiesUnlocks meaningful secondary specialty synergies and debuff scaling.
Full Awakening5 Red Stars15–16 total copiesUnlocks the final talent buff, maximum march capacity, and peak stat scaling.

A primary march leader at base level or low red stars will lag hundreds of stat percentage points behind fully ascended standard generals like Martinus or Elektra. If your token balance cannot secure the 15 to 16 copies needed for 5 red stars, hold your tokens.

Primary Leaders vs. Assistant Generals

Your spending strategy depends entirely on whether the target officer will lead the march or assist it.

When 1 Copy Is Sufficient: Assistant Generals

If you need a general strictly for the assistant slot, acquiring a single copy is a sensible stopping point:

  • Assistant generals do not contribute their basic attributes, cultivation stats, star levels, or ascension buffs to the march.
  • Only their main skill, specialty attributes, and equipped skill books activate.
  • As long as their main skill does not conflict with your primary leader's skill or books, one copy provides full immediate utility.

When 1 Copy Is Wasted: Primary March Leaders

If you intend to use the officer as a primary rally leader, monster hunter, or main wall defense general, stopping at one copy—or even two or three—is ineffective:

  • Primary officers carry the full weight of gear, dragons, spiritual beasts, and march capacity.
  • Without red stars, their stats cannot compete in modern combat.
  • If the banner ends before you finish ascending them, the fragments remain stranded until the developers return that specific general to the pool.

Rules for Spending Premium General Tokens Safely

To avoid stranding fragments on incomplete officers, follow these spending rules:

  1. Enforce an all-or-nothing threshold: Treat tokens as an indivisible reserve. Never pull on a primary leader banner unless you have enough tokens to absorb statistical variance and secure the full 15 to 16 copy equivalent.
  2. Account for pool dilution: Summoning pools contain consolation prizes, non-meta officers, Blood of Ares, runestones, and speedups. Expect full direct drops to be rare; most progress comes from accumulating fragments.
  3. Verify skill compatibility before pulling assistants: Check battle reports or simulator data to confirm the prospective assistant’s main skill does not gray out your primary general's skill or core skill books.
  4. Ignore banner rotation pressure: Missing an active rotation costs nothing. Spending partial reserves on an incomplete officer permanently stalls account growth.
