Retiring in FATE: Reawakened allows you to permanently retire a completed hero to pass one piece of upgraded equipment—an heirloom—to a new character. This feature unlocks after you defeat the assigned dungeon nemesis at the bottom of the Grove dungeon, return to town, and turn in the final quest. Once confirmed with the town elders, retirement is irreversible, and that character cannot be played in the dungeon again.

Your newly created descendant begins at level one in Grove. The chosen heirloom appears in their personal stash with enhanced base stats, reduced level requirements, and a portion of your previous hero's town standing.

Preparation Before Retiring

Because retirement is permanent and inventory does not transfer automatically, complete all item modifications and asset liquidation before speaking to the town elders:

  1. Repair and enchant the chosen item: Visit the town enchanter to maximize positive stat modifiers. Do not risk negative curse affixes through aggressive gambling or failed enchants, as negative penalties scale alongside positive stats into the next generation.
  2. Handle sockets: Leave sockets open or insert versatile gems that benefit an early leveling build rather than hyper-specialized elemental builds.
  3. Liquidate excess inventory: Stashed equipment and excess gold do not transfer to the descendant's vault. Sell unwanted rare items and convert currency into useful gems or consumables prior to finalizing retirement.
  4. Ignore pet transformations: Do not spend rare fish to transform your pet before retiring. Descendants start with a brand-new pet at character creation, and previous transformations do not carry over.

Selecting an Heirloom Item

The heirloom system applies percentage-based upgrades directly to an item's base statistics. Because scaling is multiplicative, high-tier base items provide significantly better generational value than early-game equipment with temporary enchantments.

  • Weapons with Sockets: Transferring a high-damage weapon with multiple sockets provides the quickest dungeon progression. Damage multipliers increase each generation, allowing low-level successors to defeat early enemies quickly.
  • Socketed Body Armor: Passing down chest armor with sockets lets a level-one hero equip late-game defensive gems immediately, granting high resistances and life leech early.
  • Artifact and Unique Items: Named gear featuring innate attributes—such as percentage-based life steal, increased attack speed, or cast rate bonuses—retains those unique traits alongside the heirloom stat increase.
  • Accessories: Rings and amulets generally yield lower stat returns through generational scaling compared to main-hand weapons or chest pieces.
Item CategoryPrimary Heirloom ImprovementPractical Benefit
WeaponsHigher base damage and critical multiplierIncreases clearing speed across early dungeon depths
Body Armor & ShieldsIncreased armor values and block chanceMitigates incoming physical burst damage
Helmets & GlovesBoosted attribute bonuses and attack speedHelps meet secondary gear attribute thresholds sooner
Belts & BootsExpanded potion capacity and movement speedEnhances dungeon mobility and resource management

Equipping Heirloom Gear on a Descendant

While heirlooming lowers an item's required character level, it does not remove minimum attribute thresholds or Fame requirements. A powerful ancestral weapon will remain locked if your descendant lacks the necessary Fame rank.

To equip your inherited gear as early as possible:

  1. Check Requirements Immediately: Inspect the heirloom in your descendant's personal stash to identify its Fame rank and required Strength, Dexterity, Magic, or Vitality.
  2. Farm Town Bounty Quests: Take town board contracts targeting named boss monsters on the upper dungeon floors. Defeating named targets awards substantially more Fame points than standard floor clears, accelerating your progression toward titles such as "Local Hero" or "Legend."
  3. Target Attribute Allocation: Direct every attribute point gained from early level-ups toward the specific stat requirements of the heirloom item. Delay luxury or secondary stat investments until the ancestral piece is equipped and active.
