To survive early Hardcore mode in FATE: Reawakened: The Traitor Soul, prepare your defenses in town before entering the dungeon. Permadeath eliminates any room for recovery once your health reaches zero, so your primary goal on the opening floors is mitigating burst damage through defensive racial picks, a shield, stocked escape scrolls, and a transformed companion pet.

Choosing a Starting Race

The Traitor Soul campaign introduces four playable races with distinct stat distributions and resistances. For Hardcore mode, raw survivability takes priority over offensive speed:

  • Coggers: Provide innate physical armor and magic resistance bonuses at the cost of lower agility. This defensive baseline offers the highest margin of safety against early mob swarms and sudden spike damage.
  • Orcs: Start with boosted Strength and Vitality, enabling early use of heavy armor and granting a large initial health pool. Their low starting Magic restricts early utility casting.
  • Humans: Feature balanced baseline stats with zero penalties. They offer complete freedom to pivot between melee, ranged, or magic setups without overcoming stat deficits.
  • Shadow Elves: Favor Dexterity and movement speed over health. Their reduced base Vitality makes them fragile, requiring strict distance control to avoid quick deaths.

Coggers and Orcs provide the safest starts for fresh Hardcore runs due to their built-in physical mitigation and health buffers.

Essential Town Preparation

Never descend into floor one without stocking utility supplies and defensive equipment from town vendors:

  1. Stock Town Portal and Identification Scrolls: Buy at least three Town Portal scrolls from the magic vendor and place them in your belt belt slots. A portal is your only instantaneous escape when cornered by champion mobs or when potion cooldowns leave you exposed.
  2. Equip a One-Handed Weapon and Shield: Regardless of your intended late-game build, equip a shield for the first five floors. Shields grant a passive block chance that completely negates physical hits, protecting you from sudden critical strikes delivered by early vermin and bandits.
  3. Catch Transformation Fish: Use the town fishing hole to catch fish for your pet before descending. A standard pet lacks the durability required to hold enemy attention.

Pet Transformation and Management

Feeding fish to your companion pet alters its form, boosting its combat attributes and turning it into a reliable frontline tank:

Fish TypeResulting FormTactical Benefit in Hardcore
Common Bass / PerchArachnid or CanineGrants temporary stat boosts and basic crowd distraction.
DogfishHound or BehemothProvides a massive health pool and holds single-target threat.
WebfishSpiderApplies poison and movement debuffs to slow approaching mobs.
CatfishFeline ProwlerFeatures fast attack animations and high critical strike rates.

Your pet also functions as an offsite merchant. When you send your pet back to town to sell excess inventory, you temporarily lose your primary frontline tank. Whenever your pet is away, fall back to cleared territory near the floor stairs and wait for its return rather than exploring new chambers alone.

Dungeon Pulling and Combat Tactics

Reckless exploration is the primary cause of early Hardcore deaths. Use controlled pulls to keep encounters manageable:

  • Pull mobs into cleared hallways: Avoid fighting inside uncleared rooms. Approach a doorway until you attract the attention of one or two enemies, then immediately retreat down a cleared corridor so your pet can intercept them.
  • Respect elite monster auras: If an enemy displays an elemental enchantment aura, maintain distance. Kite the target in a wide circle using ranged attacks or allow your transformed pet to take the initial hits.
  • Heal early: Consume a health potion as soon as your health drops below 50 percent. Do not attempt to finish off an enemy while low on health, as monster critical hits can bypass standard armor thresholds and end the run instantly.

Early Stat and Mastery Allocation

Distribute your attribute points to secure baseline defense before investing in offensive power:

  • Vitality (2 points per level): Invest at least two points per level into Vitality across your first ten levels to absorb unexpected poison ticks and elemental strikes.
  • Strength or Dexterity (2 points per level): Allocate points to meet the minimum stat requirements of upgraded armor, weapons, and shields.
  • Magic (1 point per level): Reserve minor investment for basic healing and utility spells.

Focus your weapon skill points into a single weapon mastery rather than splitting them across multiple weapon categories. Maximizing one mastery ensures consistent attack rating and higher damage output, minimizing the time you spend exposed to dangerous enemy attacks.
