To redesign your city in Forge of Empires without disrupting active production timers, research the Mathematics technology in the Iron Age to unlock Reconstruction Mode. Once unlocked, open the Build menu, select the Reconstruction tool, and use the staging slots to clear and rearrange your entire grid before committing the changes.
Unlocking and Accessing Reconstruction Mode
Reconstruction Mode provides a dedicated planning sandbox where you can reposition structures without needing open expansion tiles on your active map.
- Prerequisite: Research the Mathematics technology in the Iron Age tech tree. This permanently unlocks the feature.
- Access Point: Click the Build icon (the hammer and crane) on the main interface, then select the Reconstruction icon (depicted by two looping arrows and a crane).
- Live Safety: Entering Reconstruction Mode does not pause or cancel ongoing city activities. Forge Point timers, Great Building collections, goods and supply production, and military recruitments continue running normally in the background. Your live city layout remains untouched until you validate and save your new design.
Staging Buildings and Grid Clearance
Moving buildings individually on a crowded grid often creates bottlenecks. Inside Reconstruction Mode, click the Store All button to lift every placed building, Great Building, and road segment off the map and into temporary holding categories.
| Staging Category | Example Structures Held | Placement Priority |
|---|---|---|
| Town Hall | Town Hall | First (anchor along an outer map edge) |
| Great Buildings | The Arc, Castel del Monte, large wonders | High (forms primary trunk lines) |
| Production & Military | Barracks, supply workshops, goods buildings | Mid (group by matching depth) |
| Residential & Culture | Houses, happiness buildings | Mid-to-low (fill interior street slots) |
| Roads & Connectors | 1-lane roads, 2-lane avenues | Placed parallel to building edges |
| Roadless Items | Event decorations, small reward tiles | Last (fill dead corners and narrow gaps) |
Reconstruction staging is purely temporary and does not function as permanent storage. You cannot delete unwanted items or store retired buildings into your permanent inventory from this menu. Every single structure held in staging must be returned to the city grid before the game allows you to apply the layout.
Placement Order and Road Efficiency
Because roads generate no population, supplies, or combat bonuses, minimizing total road tiles is the most effective way to recover usable grid space.
- Anchor the Town Hall: Push the Town Hall to an outer edge or corner of your settlement. Roads only need to touch a single tile of the Town Hall to supply the network; centering it in your city wastes road frontage on multiple sides.
- Place Great Buildings and Large Sets: Position large structures along the perimeter borders. Align structures that share identical edge dimensions along the same road segment to prevent staggered borders.
- Run Straight, Double-Sided Streets: Lay long, straight corridors rather than loops or square blocks. Arrange buildings back-to-back so that a single street provides access to rows of structures on both sides.
- Trim Redundant Corners: Inspect 90-degree intersections. Road tiles that meet at perpendicular angles often create an extra corner tile that can be deleted without breaking connectivity.
- Fill Gaps with Roadless Items: Place secondary event pieces and 1x1 or 2x2 cultural decorations into irregular pockets where roads cannot reach.
Validating Connections and Applying Changes
Before exiting Reconstruction Mode, review your settlement to ensure every structure is fully functional:
- Check Connectivity: Look for a red disconnected-service icon above any structure. This indicates that the building lacks a valid road path back to the Town Hall.
- Empty the Staging Bar: Verify that every holding category displays a count of zero. The green Apply Changes button remains disabled as long as any building or road segment remains in staging.
- Revert if Necessary: If you run out of space and cannot fit all required structures back onto the grid, click Revert Changes. This immediately discards all alterations and restores your city to its initial state without penalty.
- Commit the Redesign: When all staging counters reach zero and road links are intact, click Apply Changes to update your live city instantly without resetting any active production timers.
