To win battles with minimal troop losses in Forge of Empires, inspect the defending army composition before combat begins, deploy unit classes that directly counter enemy squads, and trigger unit abilities to mitigate incoming damage.
Core Unit Classes and Counters
Every military unit belongs to one of five classes. While stats increase as you advance through the technological eras, the counter relationships remain consistent in both manual and automatic battles.
| Unit Class | Effective Against | Vulnerable To | Combat Role |
|---|---|---|---|
| Light | Fast Units | Heavy and Artillery Units | Flanking and utilizing defensive forest terrain |
| Heavy | Light Units | Ranged Units | Absorbing front-line hits and holding chokepoints |
| Fast | Ranged Units | Light Units | Crossing the map quickly to eliminate backline targets |
| Ranged | Heavy Units | Fast Units | Dealing sustained damage from distance before targets close in |
| Artillery | Heavy and Stationary Units | Fast Units | Long-range siege fire across the entire battlefield |
Target matching determines how efficiently your army clears sectors:
- Light units rely on mobility and terrain defense to intercept Fast units, but they take heavy damage from Artillery and struggle against armored Heavy units.
- Heavy units feature high armor ratings to absorb hits from Light infantry, but their limited movement leaves them exposed to prolonged attacks from Ranged units.
- Fast units possess high movement range to bypass enemy front lines and eliminate fragile Ranged units, but Light units counter them with high bonus damage.
- Ranged units whittle down slow Heavy units from afar, but they collapse quickly if ambushed by Fast units.
- Artillery units strike slow targets across the map, but they cannot defend themselves if Fast units close the distance.
Defensive and Offensive Special Abilities
Special abilities modify unit behavior beyond raw attack and defense values.
Defensive Abilities
- Stealth: Prevents the unit from being targeted by ranged or artillery fire while standing on specific terrain, such as forests or trenches. Enemies must move to an adjacent hex to reveal and attack the unit.
- Flying: Grants immunity to attacks from standard melee units lacking anti-air capabilities and allows the unit to cross terrain obstacles like rivers and swamps without movement penalties.
- Force Field: Absorbs a flat amount of incoming damage from each strike, significantly reducing the impact of low-damage multi-hit attacks.
Offensive and Reaction Abilities
- Blast: Increases damage dealt as the distance between the attacker and the target decreases.
- Power Shot: Ignores the target's defensive terrain bonuses, dealing standard calculated damage even against fortified positions.
- Contact (Retaliation): Automatically strikes back at melee attackers if the defending unit survives the initial attack. When facing a unit with Contact, attack with ranged units or high-defense units first to absorb or avoid the counter-strike before finishing it off with fragile units.
- Dug-in: Grants a defensive bonus as long as the unit does not move from its hex.
- Rally: Increases the attack and defense values of all remaining allied units when the unit enters combat.
How to Use Rogues and Secret Identity
The Rogue is a specialized unit defined by its Secret Identity ability. When a Rogue takes damage for the first time in battle, it ignores all damage from that hit and transforms into a copy of another living, non-Rogue unit in your army.
The 1 Regular Unit and 7 Rogues Composition
A common tactical setup uses one regular era unit paired with seven Rogues:
- Deploy seven Rogues alongside a single durable or high-damage unit from your current era.
- Advance your Rogues toward the enemy while holding your single regular unit back near the rear edge of the battlefield.
- Allow the enemy AI to attack the advancing Rogues. Each Rogue absorbs its initial hit for zero damage and transforms into a duplicate of your rear unit.
Critical Failure Point: If your sole regular unit dies before your Rogues take their first hit, the Rogues have no unit to copy. Any untransformed Rogue dies in a single strike once all non-Rogue allies are eliminated. Always keep your anchor unit protected until your Rogues have transformed.
Next Steps for Battle Preparation
Before starting a sector fight or Guild Expedition encounter, take these actions:
- Check enemy unit types: Count how many units belong to each class in the defending lineup.
- Select your counters: Build an attacking team that exploits the enemy's dominant class using the counter table above.
- Survey the terrain grid: Note forests for Light unit defense or Stealth activation, and avoid bottlenecking your Heavy units in swamps.
- Target order: Focus fire on enemy Fast units first if you are fielding Ranged or Artillery squads, or bait melee units onto open tiles to eliminate them before they reach your backline.

I wish I had read this before upgrading the wrong thing.
This guide answered the exact question I had.
Nice guide. I am checking the other Forge of Empires articles next.
I tried this today and it worked better than my old setup.
