To unlock the Chhatri in the Forge of Empires Mughal Empire settlement, stockpile all required cultural goods and Rupiah first, then temporarily dismantle production buildings and roads to fill the vacant grid with streetless diplomacy structures like Alleys or Baldachins. Once the diplomacy target is met and the technology is unlocked, delete the temporary buildings and rebuild your economic layout.
1. Stockpile Required Goods and Rupiah First
Do not dismantle your settlement layout until your inventory fully covers the unlock costs. If you tear down workshops before banking the necessary goods, you will stall your settlement without the resources to research the technology or rebuild your economy.
Before initiating the diplomacy swing, ensure you have:
- Basmati Rice and Sarees: Keep Basmati Farms and Saree Weavers running until you hold the exact quantities demanded by the Chhatri technology node. Do not spend these goods on settlement land expansions.
- Rupiah Buffer: Accumulate extra Rupiah beyond basic running costs. Demolishing and rebuilding residential Bhavans and goods workshops costs currency; running out forces you to wait on slow passive Embassy collections.
2. Execute the Temporary Diplomacy Dump
In cultural settlements, diplomacy structures provide their full diplomacy value without needing an active road connection to the Embassy. This mechanic allows you to bypass the strict spatial constraints of the early Mughal grid.
Follow this sequence once your goods and currency are secured:
- Halt and Sell Production: Collect finished cycles, then sell off non-essential goods buildings (such as Basmati Farms and Saree Weavers) to free up large rectangular blocks of land.
- Clear Road Networks: Delete the paved paths and gravel roads connecting to those emptied production plots. Roads occupy usable grid tiles without granting diplomacy points.
- Pack the Grid with Alleys or Baldachins: Build Alleys or Baldachins edge-to-edge across every empty tile. Because they do not need street access, pack them tightly into every open corner and gap.
- Research the Chhatri: As soon as your total diplomacy satisfies the research requirement, open the settlement tech tree, pay the banked Basmati Rice and Sarees, and unlock the Chhatri node.
3. Rebuild the Grid and Position the Chhatri
The Chhatri's diplomacy check is a one-time gate. Once unlocked, the requirement is permanently satisfied, and you do not need to keep the temporary diplomacy structures on your map.
- Sell Temporary Structures: Delete the packed Alleys and Baldachins to recover building space and partial resources.
- Restore Roads and Economy: Re-extend minimal road paths from your Embassy, rebuild residential Bhavans for population, and replace your goods production buildings.
- Place the Chhatri: The Chhatri is a 2x2 cultural building that provides base diplomacy and compound chain connections. Place it directly adjacent to the Embassy or along supported chain paths to activate its neighborhood efficiency bonuses.
- Keep Roads Minimal: Avoid surrounding the Chhatri with extra road tiles. Every unnecessary road tile drains Rupiah and consumes grid space required for subsequent mid-game structures like the Shanti Ghar.
